The hum of the office was reassuring in a weird sort of way. Keyboards clattering away, muffled conversations, an occasional ringing of a phone, it all sounded normal. Predictable. Safe. Or at least, so I tried to keep repeating. I settled in at my office, powering on my computer. The screen flickered on, and I quickly waded through email, getting current on work I’d missed when I’d been on leave.
