The Curtain

"Ma'am?" The young blond haired girl at the register asked. I was too dazed out to even notice. It wasn't until she repeated it that I looked at her. "Did you want cream or sugar?" She asked staring at me expectedly. "Oh, I'm sorry and no thank you," I said smiling an extra warm smile at her. I felt bad about losing focus, something that seemed to be happening to me a lot lately. The line had been long and when it was finally my turn, I ordered a cup of coffee to go. Someone had interrupted to complain about something and she had to tend to them. I guess in that time I kind of just decided it was a great time to leave planet earth. I gripped my debit card and waited for her to type a couple of things "You can go ahead and insert your card," She said smiling at me. I nodded getting ready to insert it. Before I could pay someone came from behind me and handed her a ten. I turned around staring James down. "I can pay for my own coffee," I said annoyed. I knew coming to this coffee place was a bad idea, they were overpriced too. The coffee was good though and they were close. I moved next to the empty spot next to the register and waited for my coffee. The guy working there sat it in front of me and I thanked him, grabbing it, and heading to sit at a table. I took a sip of my coffee and looked out the window. It was warmer outside which meant more people were standing around enjoying the weather. Jame's pulled out the chair in front of me and had a seat. His usually curly hair had been shaved off and his eyes had dark bags under them. I took another sip of my coffee and stared at him. He had traded in his usual professional attire for some jeans and a white t-shirt. "Didn't think you owned jeans," I said laughing. He took a sip of his hot coffee and decided to grab a couple of sugar packets deciding they hadn't added enough. "It's my day off," He said and I nodded turning to look out the window again. "I'm not stalking you, Katherine, if that's what you're thinking," He said. I could feel his dark eyes staring at me even though I hadn't bothered turning to look at him. "I know," I said reassuring him and turning to look back at him and smile. I may have thought that at one point but I'm the one that entered his life again, not the other way around. "So, you and Patrick huh?" He asked grabbing a small stick and mixing the overly sugared coffee. Was that a hint of jealousy I saw? Well too bad, you're engaged. "We just went on a date," I said laughing. My chest bouncing only slightly from the movement, but it was enough for his eyes to follow. "Why the hair change?" I asked curiously. "Merideth," He said and I nodded understanding. I liked his curls. "They'll grow back pretty quick," He said as if he knew what I was thinking. Maybe he did. I stared at him and took a couple more sips of my coffee. It was still really hot. Too hot to finish by gulping it down and running away from this predicament. I wasn't even a hundred percent sure that sentence was just meant for the coffee. I looked back down at my cup when I felt a hand rub my knee immediately making me look back up at James. My eyes darted to his full lips and worked I worked my way up to his lust filled eyes. I tried to remind myself that he was getting married and that I was not a homewrecker. Or maybe I was. I licked my lips and cleared my throat "I have a curtain I'm having trouble getting up," I announced. "You have a curtain you can't get up," He repeated and smiled folding his arms. "Well, do you have a drill?" He asked taking a long gulp of his coffee. What was this conversation becoming? "No, I was hoping that you did," I said looking at him knowingly. "Maybe I do," He said finishing his coffee and standing up. "I'm gonna have to take a look at that curtain though," He said holding his hand out. I placed my hand in his and stood up. We threw our cups away and headed towards the door "After you," he said grinning and holding the door open for me. We took his car but ended up at my place. I think he called it "cute" and I made sure to mention that not everyone lived in mansions like he did. "So, did you f**k my brother yet?" He asked slouched against my kitchen counter. I stopped making tea and turned around to look at him. "Get the hell out of my house, if you're going to assume s**t like that," I yelled. I should've known bring him here was a bad idea. "I didn't assume, I asked," He smirked and came close to my face. "Well, I didn't," I whispered getting even closer to him. We stared at each other for a couple more seconds, our faces only inches apart. Than he kissed me.
