Magnus (23)
I gritted my teeth as I watched behind the veil, a silent spectator looking on as others in the roman times had when gladiators fought beasts and mythical creatures for entertainment and sport.
Except this wasn’t for sport or entertainment and it wasn’t some faceless gladiators that were fighting, but my grandpup. I watched with Deedee who occasionally hiccuped in sadness as we stood still and watched Kai train. I wanted to roar out in anger and tear off the head of his opponent as he delivered another kick to Kai’s side that sent him sprawling onto his back, his breath choppy.
When the horn blared, I almost sagged with relief and could see Deedee clasp her hands nervously. His opponent approached Kai and helped him up, causing my fangs to come out and my claws to lengthen. Kai got up, wincing as he held his side and the growl finally left my lips, my eyes now red in anger as my old rogue wolf wanted to attack and kill who had the audacity to hurt Kai.
“Magnus” Deedee softly said
I couldn’t look at her. I couldn’t move my eyes away from the little pup as she slowly walked away with his sparring partner.
“His name is Jonas” The voice said
I couldn’t turn my head to look at the new person who had joined us, even though I wanted to shout at her. My eyes stayed glued to them as I watched Jonas touch Kai’s side. When I saw a blue light emit from his hands, I knew he was healing Kai who almost immediately smiled and stood taller and started walking faster towards the others. When Kai walked too far for me to see him and was completely out of my sight, I turned around to face the intruder, my anger a vicious beast
“You were not invited for this reason” She said
“He’s a child” I scoffed “You have adults fighting and harming him”
“You know he has to do this” She said again “Just like you did”
“I didn’t start before I was ten years old” I growled, my eyes flashing at her
“He is so young, too young” Deedee whispered
“He is” She said “But then again, he is also more powerful than any protector before him”
“This doesn’t justify his opponent being an adult” I replied angrily
“He needs to learn to harness the pain” She spoke softly “Because his enemies are not children but adult themselves who will not think twice before doing him harm”
“And his pain? The bruising?” I asked
“All to help” She said “It will help both of them in the long run”
“She cries everytime Kai is hurt” Deedee sniffed
“But she helps him just as she is meant to” She walked towards the veil and touches it.
Instantly, the image changes and it is like a tv has been switched on to show another channel. Kai is the canteen, sitting down on a wooden bench with a plate of food in front of him. He is smiling and talking to a few of the training warriors who have now gathered around him, some sitting and eating at the table while others stood in a protective circle
“He is a true king” She said with a smile
“Because he accepted their beating?” I asked with frustration
“Because he knows when to speak to his advisors” She said “Look Magnus, how he commands their respect. Has their friendship. He has no arrogance. There's no self entitlement or aggression. On the field, he was the student - but outside of it, his wisdom transcends theirs and they know it. Yet he sits before them, humble and as kin. Equal and bound in respect. That is what makes a true king. A gentle but fierce heart that rules with compassion and rightness”
I looked on with pride as I saw them laugh at whatever Kai said, their admiration of him was plain to see. And yet, my heart still hurt.
“He is not you Magnus” She said “His task….his obligation is much more than yours ever was, so of course his training will he harder”
“I can’t accept this” I said with gritted teeth
“This is hurting them both” Deedee added “Surely there is another way?”
“He must go through this training” She added
She slowly walked back to where she originally stood and turned to look at us, her hands clasped down and at the front of her long lavender dress. I watched her as she looked at me, her gaze steady and clear and I knew this wasn’t the end of her visit. Something more was to come and they were hiding it from me
“He’s not doing this just for him, is he?” I asked
I saw Deedee look at me in surprise before understanding came over her features. She slowly shook her head, talking a step forward with imploring hands
“You can’t mean to say that…Ari….our Aria, is also going to be fighting?” Deedee whispered
She stayed silent, looking at us with her big eyes
Deedee choked, one hand shaking as she covered her mouth, her eyes awash with tears.
“Aria is just a child. Younger than Kai” I said
“She is not the Supreme’s mate for no reason” She said
“So she IS his mate?” I asked
“Was there any doubt?” She asked with a gentle smile
“No…But I think, Jason hoped it wasn’t so” I smirked
“There is much that many hoped, wouldn’t be happening” She said with a shake of her head
“B…But surely Aria…oh god” Deedee cried out “The pain, her side hurting…shes feeling Kai’s pain”
Again she was silent. I felt sick and had to brace my feet apart further to ground myself from falling
“Aria’s not feeling Kai’s pain “I said, feeling the sweat forming on my forehead “She’s being trained, isn't she?”
“What!” Deedee’s voice shook “No, no that can’t be. That was never the plan!. Not at such a young age!”
“Thats what she means” I said, anger vibrating my body
“There’s never been a Supreme couple. Only the Supreme” She said, her arms lifting to her side as she mimicked a metal balance scales, her eyes now white “The one creation was split to make two halves which would join as one. If one has more power than the other, evil can overthrow it”
She tipped her arms, one going down and the other rising
“If the other has too much, the desire to turn away from the good is strong and so the balance tips in their favor and our side will lose” She said, once again her arms rising and lifting “But, if both are given equal measures but with different qualities, they become one being. They harness one power. Although at times, one could be stronger than the other”
“Aria will be the high witch, I know that” Deedee said “And having powers that help Kai being a better Supreme - isn't that too much power for such a little girl?”
“She hasn’t even scratched the surface of her power” She said, her eyes still white “Her powers are so sacred, given from us of sight - that she is being guarded from both realms. Both will try to find her…use her but only Kai protects her true identity. She has no option but to be trained as Kai. Her time on earth will be considered and her training will work accordingly”
I saw the tears gather in Deedee’s eyes and I stiffened my body, making myself take deep breaths so as not to say or do anything to cause more problems
“Where is the danger?” I asked
“Everywhere” She responded, her hair now flying out behind her “But not for many years. This is why the training must start now so when it happens, their powers are beyond what is expected”
“I want to see him. Deedee and I are the last of the ancients” I said
“But you are not the last on this earth” She replied
“I know” I nodded “Kelsie, Sherry, Kai Anna and all the kids. They are descendants”
“Among the others” She said
“Others?” I asked, shocked
“What others?” Deedee asked
“The ones you have not realised yet because their powers were hidden” She slowly lifted up into the air “We couldn’t have them discovered, but they are here”
“Who?” I asked, moving forward “Where are they? Who are they?”
“Some are hidden by Kai” She explained “While others are discovering who they are. But, only one is trapped….waiting to be free”
“Who is it?” I asked again, frustrated
“She is one you know and suspected” She said in a cryptic voice “And her power grows as does her ability to find Pandora’s box”
I sucked in a deep breath, my eyes now wild as I look at a pale Deedee who is visibly shaking
“It can’t be opened” Deedee whispered “Life as we know it will end. The world would be decimated”
“Not just the world” She said “heaven and hell, the sun and the skies. The moon and the stars. Life will cease to be. What it will ravage on this plant and the realms will not bought back”
“Then tell HIM to do something!” I said between gritted teeth “HE is the only one who can stop it”
“But he has give the power to you and your Magnus. To the gaurdians” She replied to my annoyance
“Same f*****g bullshit” I said
“And yet true” She smiled
“Without the proper help, how can this even be contained?” I asked
“The help is here. It has been waiting on you to find it” She replied.
“Where? I’ve not seen any help. And you better not mean the kids” I said, my fists clenching in anger
“Follow the scent Magnus” She said “DO what you know is right, no matter how implausible it may seem. For in this scent is your salvation. In this scent, you and yours will have afighting chance”
Suddenly a large white light shone behind her in a circle, causing Deedee and I to shield our eyes. When we opened them again, She was gone and the room was once more a dull space. I looked at Deedee who watched me with concern on her face.
“What did she mean Magnus?” Deedee asked me
“I…I’m not sure” I said with a frown
“Weren’t you following a scent for the last few years” Deedee asked
“Yes but….surely they can’t mean that?” I asked, surprised “I don’t think it can be that because if it was, why would it be so hard to find?”
“I don’t know” Deedee whispered again “This is such a nightmare. I can’t imagine what it could ….oh gosh, Magnus!”
“What?” I asked, looking at her warily
“Pandora’s box” Deedee said, her face even whiter than before “I know who she means…I mean, I could be wrong but I don’t think so”
“Who?” i asked in confusion
”Who has Kai been protecting? Telling his father they can’t save him yet?” Deedee said, clutching her hands together “Who emitted power but seemed to have been dulled?”
My eyes widened as both she and I looked at each other. My brain kicked into gear and I felt the shock run through my body. We both had so many questions but none of the answers but little pockets of information was starting to make sense.
Our eyes met and we both uttered the same word, the same name at the one time
“Tracy”
