Chapter 6: The Web Unravels

The restaurant Marcus had chosen was elegant and private, the kind of place where important conversations happened away from prying eyes. Irene found him already seated at a corner table, studying a folder of documents with the focused intensity she'd come to admire. "You look like you've seen a ghost," he said as she sat down, his green eyes sharp with concern. "Maybe I have," she replied, accepting the wine he poured for her. "Tell me about Sara Craig." Marcus's expression grew serious. "She's been asking questions about you. Specifically, about Phoenix Entertainment's funding and your relationship with my firm. She approached one of my junior associates yesterday, claiming to be an old friend who wanted to reconnect." Irene's hand tightened around her wine glass. Sara was moving faster than expected, probably spooked by Phoenix Entertainment's rapid success. In the original timeline, Sara had wormed her way into Irene's life gradually, playing the loyal childhood friend until she was in position to strike. This time, she was being more aggressive. "What did you tell your associate?" "To refer all inquiries about you directly to me," Marcus said. "And to be very careful around Ms. Craig. She didn't strike him as someone with your best interests at heart." "She's not." Irene took a sip of wine, considering her options."Sara and I grew up together in Brooklyn. Poor families, big dreams. But where I wanted to build something lasting, she always looked for shortcuts." "And now she sees your success and wants her piece of it." "Something like that." Irene couldn't tell him about the betrayal and murder that hadn't happened yet in this timeline. "I need to be very careful around her." Marcus leaned forward, his voice dropping to a confidential tone. "There's something else. I had my investigator run a background check on her after she started sniffing around. She's been fired from her last two jobs for... creative interpretations of company resources." "Embezzlement?" "Nothing they could prove in court, but the pattern is concerning. She also seems to have connections to some unsavory characters in the financial district. People who specialize in hostile takeovers and asset stripping." Irene felt a chill run down her spine. Sara was planning something bigger than she'd realized. In the original timeline, the betrayal had seemed like a crime of opportunity—jealousy and greed spiraling out of control. But if Sara was already building a network of corrupt allies... "I need you to do something for me," Irene said finally. "I need you to investigate William Thompson as well. Recent law school graduate, probably looking to make connections in the business world." Marcus's eyebrows rose. "Should I be concerned about competition for your attention". There was something in his voice—not quite jealousy, but definitely possessiveness. It sent an unexpected thrill through her chest. "William Thompson is many things," she said carefully, "but competition for my attention isn't one of them. He's a threat to my business, potentially to my safety. And I think he and Sara might be working together." "Together how?" Irene looked into Marcus's eyes, seeing the genuine concern there, the protective instinct that had never existed in William's calculated affections. For the first time since her rebirth, she felt the overwhelming urge to tell someone the truth. "If I told you something impossible," she said slowly, "something that would sound completely insane, would you at least listen?" Marcus reached across the table, covering her hand with his. His touch was warm, steady, grounding. "Irene, in the six months I've known you, you've predicted market trends that shouldn't be predictable, identified opportunities that more experienced investors missed, and built a company that's already outperforming firms that have been in business for decades. If you told me you were from the future, I'd probably ask for stock tips." The joke was so close to the truth that Irene almost laughed. Almost. "What if I told you that William and Sara were planning to destroy everything I've built? That they're capable of betrayal, theft, even murder?" Marcus's expression grew deadly serious. "Then I'd ask what you need me to do to stop them." The conviction in his voice, the immediate acceptance of her fears without demanding proof or explanation, hit Irene like a physical blow. In her previous life, she'd been so isolated, so afraid to trust anyone completely. But Marcus was offering something she'd never had before—unconditional support. "There's more," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I think there are others involved. A whole network of people who target successful entrepreneurs, particularly women. They destroy companies, steal assets, and move on to the next victim." Marcus's jaw tightened. "How do you know all this?" Irene met his gaze steadily. "Because I've seen what happens when they win." The weight of her words hung between them. Marcus studied her face, and she could see him processing what she wasn't quite saying—that somehow, in some way, she had direct knowledge of their methods. "Then we make sure they don't win this time," he said finally. The simple statement, delivered with absolute certainty, made something tight in Irene's chest finally relax. For the first time since her rebirth, she wasn't facing this alone. "It won't be easy," she warned. "These people are smart, connected, and completely ruthless. They'll use every dirty trick in the book." "So will we." "So will we." Marcus's smile was sharp as a blade, and Irene realized that while she'd been thinking of him as an ally, she'd underestimated just how dangerous he could be when protecting something he valued. "There's something else," she said. "I want to accelerate Phoenix Entertainment's expansion. If they're moving faster than expected, I need to be in a stronger position when they make their play." "What did you have in mind?" "Multiple fronts. I want to launch Phoenix Gaming Studios, Phoenix Fashion, and Phoenix Tech all within the next year. I need to diversify quickly, make myself too big and too visible to destroy quietly." Marcus leaned back in his chair, his expression a mixture of admiration and concern."That's incredibly ambitious. Most companies take years to expand into even one new sector successfully." "Most companies don't have the advantages I have." "Which are?" Irene smiled mysteriously. "Let's just say I have very good instincts about future trends." Marcus studied her for a long moment. "You know, sometimes I get the feeling that you're playing a completely different game than everyone else. Like you can see moves on the board that the rest of us can't even imagine." If only he knew how right he was. "Maybe I am," she said softly. "The question is, are you willing to play that game with me?" Marcus's answer was immediate and certain. "Irene, I'd follow you into hell if you asked me to." The intensity of his response sent heat through her entire body. In her previous life, she'd been so focused on business, so afraid of appearing weak or vulnerable, that she'd never allowed herself to truly connect with anyone. But Marcus was offering something she'd never had—a true partnership, both professional and personal. "Then let's start planning," she said. "Because if I'm right about what's coming, we're going to need every advantage we can get." As they spent the next hour outlining strategies and contingencies, Irene felt a sense of rightness that had been missing from her previous life. This time, she wasn't building her empire out of desperation or fear. She was building it out of strength, with someone who understood the stakes and was willing to fight beside her. When they finally left the restaurant, Marcus walked her to her car, his hand resting protectively on the small of her back. "Irene," he said as she reached for her car door, "I want you to know that whatever happens, whatever these people try to do, you're not facing it alone anymore." She turned to face him, struck by the sincerity in his voice. "Thank you. That means more than you know." "There's something else." Marcus stepped closer, close enough that she could see the flecks of gold in his green eyes."I need you to know that this isn't just about business for me anymore. You're not just my investment or my partner. You're..." He trailed off, seeming to struggle with the words. "I'm what?" she prompted softly. "You're the most important thing in my life," he said simply. "And I'll do whatever it takes to protect you." Before she could respond, he leaned down and kissed her, soft and gentle and full of promises. When they broke apart, Irene felt dizzy with emotion. "Marcus," she whispered. "I know the timing is complicated," he said. "I know you're focused on the company and dealing with these threats. But I needed you to know." Irene reached up, framing his face with her hands. "In my previous—" She caught herself. "In my experience, the timing is never perfect. But some things are worth fighting for regardless of timing." "Is this worth fighting for?" She answered him with another kiss, deeper this time, full of the passion she'd never allowed herself to feel in her previous life. When they broke apart, both were breathing hard. "Yes," she said firmly. "This is definitely worth fighting for." As she drove home, Irene felt a lightness she hadn't experienced since her rebirth. Yes, Sara and William were out there, plotting her destruction. Yes, she was facing threats that had killed her in another timeline. But she wasn't the same person who had died alone and betrayed. This time, she had Marcus. This time, she had love worth protecting. And this time, she was going to win.
