Chapter 2

919 Words
After going back upstairs, I took my time before lying back down. The odd conversation with Alec, unfortunately, had me on edge. I felt bad for the guy. I did but the question was how was I going to convince the other shifters to let the seemingly harmless wolf run the woods with them. After trying for a couple of hours to find sleep, I finally gave up. Looking at the clock reading 1:00 P.M, I glared at the clock. I heaved a sigh and headed down the stairs. This is gonna be such a great day, I couldn't help but think sarcastically. I spent the next couple hours calling everyone whose number I had, and the ones I didn't. I asked the ones I did get ahold of to pass along a message. The small shifters in the area needed to have a meeting to vote on whether to let someone start running on the land. While many wanted to know who or what kind of shifter wanted permission to run on the land, I wouldn't give up that crucial piece of information. I knew if I did, then no one would show up and would vote no without hearing what Alec had to say. By four, almost everyone agreed to meet at my place at 8. Not giving me a lot of time to prepare, I rushed around the house cleaning and preparing for the 30 or so shifters that would be taking up my living room in a few short hours. After I finished cleaning, I knew I couldn't put it off any longer and headed over to Alec's place to tell him the news. Walking across the street, I got more nervous as I noticed the multiple cars taking up the driveway. Before I could knock the door open, the bear gave me an odd look and looked behind me before I could say anything. "I'm guessing your not the pizza delivery guy," a frown crossing his face, making him look like a pouting child. "Umm, no, I'm not. I'm here to talk to Alec about what we talked about earlier," I said, trying to hide my smile at the huge shifter's continued pout. "Oh, you must be the fox shifter! Anna right? I hope you have some good news for my friend. He doesn't do well with people and he doesn't have a lot of friends cause of reasons. My name is Jace but anyway, let me get him for you." He said as he disappeared into the house before I could say anything. I stood in front of the open door for several minutes, trying not to listen in the conversation going on in the house, as Alec's friends teased him about the hot red-haired fox shifter at the door. Alec's face was as red as my hair, and he looked like he wanted to crawl into a hole and be anywhere except in front of me at that moment. "Hey, Anna, sorry about that. They're just a bunch of goofs. Please don't listen to anything they have said." His words came out in a rush and his face turned an even brighter red as laughter hit our ears from in the house. "No worries, Alec," Trying unsuccessfully to hide my smile, "I just wanted to tell you, I was able to get ahold of the other shifters and there will be a meeting at my house tonight at 8. If you'll be there early I would appreciate it." "Tonight? That soon? I was under the impression from what you said earlier, that it would take longer than this before the meeting would take place." Panic was clear on his face, Alec looked like he wanted to bolt back into the house and hide. "Alec, it'll be fine just be there by 7:30 and well go from there. Don't overthink this. Just take a breath and just be you, ok? You seem like a great guy and certainly not anything like what these shifters think of wolves so, just be you and you'll be fine. I'm not worried and I don't think you should be either. Anyway, I've gotta get back to the house. I've still got stuff to do before everyone gets here. I'll see you in a bit, Alec." With a smile I turned away, not giving him a chance to try and cancel on me. The next 2 hours went by quickly. The pizza and drinks I ordered were delivered on time. I heard a knock at the door. It felt more like 5 hours had passed instead of only two. "Come in! Alec, I know this may sound odd coming from another shifter, but is there any chance I can get your help to move this loveseat against the wall." My breath came in gasps as I crouched in front of the loveseat. After a couple of seconds with no reply, I finally looked up. Seeing not only Alec and the bear shifter Jace from earlier, but also another wolf. I froze. Taking in the scene before me, I knew something was wrong. The new wolf was looking at me as if he was hungry and I was the first meal he's seen in years. "Alec, Jace," Not daring to take my eyes off the new wolf, I tried to calm my now panicked breathing. I could catch the wolf's scent but before I could do or say anything else, the wolf stepped forward letting out a growl. "Mate!"
