Annabelle quietly pulled out the knife and gripped it tightly, just as she thought the man would discover her. But then, his phone rang.
The man answered the call, “Big Brother, okay, I’ll go now.”
He hung up, turned around, and left the kitchen without approaching Annabelle any further.
When the kitchen was silent again, only the faint bubbling sound from the medicine pot remained. Annabelle sighed in relief and put the knife back. Her palms were slick with sweat.
She was worried the man might return, so she quickly turned off the heat and poured the medicine into a thermos before heading upstairs.
The two men’s behavior was clearly suspicious, and she decided to return to her room first to tell Kendrick what she had seen, so he could notify the hotel staff.
