A Dangerous Promise

The mansion felt different after Adriana left. The air was heavier somehow, like the house itself knew trouble had just walked through its doors. Isabella stood in the center of the hall for a moment, staring at the large entrance where Adriana had disappeared. “She really doesn’t like me,” she said finally. “That’s obvious,” Vincenzo replied. He sounded calm, but Isabella noticed the tension in his shoulders. “You didn’t tell me she could just walk in here.” “She normally can’t.” That answer made Isabella turn toward him quickly. “Wait… what?” “The guards allowed her through,” he explained. “Why would they do that?” “Because she used to come here often.” That sentence sat heavily in the room. Isabella folded her arms. “So she basically knows your house better than I do.” “Yes.” “That’s comforting.” His lips curved slightly. “You’ll learn it quickly.” “I hope so,” she said. “Because apparently I need to survive here.” Marco returned to the hall a moment later. “The car has left the property,” he reported. Vincenzo nodded once. “Good.” But Marco didn’t move. He looked like he had something else to say. “What is it?” Vincenzo asked. “There’s another issue.” Isabella immediately felt her stomach tighten. “What kind of issue?” Vincenzo asked calmly. Marco lowered his voice slightly. “We found the car from last night.” “Where?” “Near the east gate.” “And?” Marco’s expression hardened. “It wasn’t empty.” Silence filled the hall. Isabella suddenly felt very aware that she was standing inside the home of a mafia leader. “What does that mean?” she asked carefully. Marco looked at Vincenzo before answering. “It means someone was watching the estate.” Her heart skipped. “Watching… us?” “Yes.” Vincenzo turned slightly toward Marco. “Did they identify themselves?” “No.” “Did they leave?” “Yes.” “Then let them go.” Isabella blinked. “That’s it?” Vincenzo looked at her. “For now.” “That sounds very calm for someone spying on your house.” “It happens.” She stared at him. “That is not normal.” “It is in my world.” That sentence made her quiet again. Marco excused himself to return to the security team, leaving Isabella and Vincenzo alone in the hall. She walked slowly toward one of the tall windows and looked outside. The gardens were still peaceful. But now she knew someone had been out there. Watching. “You’re thinking again,” Vincenzo said behind her. She turned around. “Yes.” “What about?” “Everything you told me.” He waited. She hesitated for a moment before speaking. “Your rules.” He nodded slightly. “Do they scare you?” “Honestly?” “Yes.” “A little.” That answer seemed to satisfy him. Fear meant she understood the situation. But Isabella crossed her arms again. “That doesn’t mean I’m going to hide in this mansion forever.” “You won’t have to.” “When?” “When the situation stabilizes.” “And when will that be?” He didn’t answer. That told her everything she needed to know. She sighed. “You’re impossible.” “And yet you’re still here.” “That’s because I don’t have many choices.” “Everyone has choices.” Isabella raised an eyebrow. “Are you saying I can cancel this whole marriage?” He watched her carefully. “If you want to.” That answer surprised her. For a moment she didn’t speak. Then she shook her head. “No.” “Why not?” “You already know why.” Her family. Their debts. Their safety. Vincenzo studied her expression quietly. “You’re loyal.” “I try to be.” “That’s rare.” Isabella looked around the enormous hall again. “I just didn’t expect loyalty to lead me into the mafia.” He chuckled softly. “Life rarely follows expectations.” Later that afternoon, Isabella wandered through the gardens. Maria had offered to show her around the house, but the mansion was so large it almost made her dizzy. Outside felt easier. The sunlight warmed the stone path beneath her feet as she walked between rows of tall hedges and blooming flowers. For the first time since arriving, she felt like she could breathe. “Beautiful, isn’t it?” Isabella jumped slightly. She turned to see Marco standing a few steps away. “You scared me.” “My apologies.” She relaxed. “I didn’t hear you coming.” “That happens.” Marco walked beside her along the path. “You like the gardens?” “They’re amazing.” “They were Mr. Romano’s mother’s favorite place.” Isabella looked at him. “She designed them.” “Really?” “Yes.” Something in Marco’s voice sounded respectful. “She passed away several years ago.” Isabella nodded slowly. “That must have been hard for him.” “It was.” They walked in silence for a moment. Then Isabella asked the question that had been bothering her. “Marco… can I ask you something?” “Of course.” “Is Adriana really as dangerous as Vincenzo says?” Marco didn’t hesitate. “Yes.” “Why?” “Because she understands how this world works.” “And I don’t.” “Not yet.” That answer made Isabella laugh softly. “I’m learning very quickly.” “I noticed.” They reached the center of the garden where a large fountain stood. The water sparkled in the sunlight. “Marco,” Isabella said. “Yes?” “Do you think this marriage is a mistake?” The bodyguard considered the question carefully. Finally he said, “That depends.” “On what?” “On whether you survive it.” She stared at him. “That’s not comforting.” “I prefer honesty.” Isabella leaned against the edge of the fountain. “You know, most girls dream about romantic weddings.” “This one will still be romantic.” She laughed again. “In a mafia way?” “Yes.” Before she could respond, a voice interrupted them. “Well… this is interesting.” Isabella turned. Adriana stood at the garden entrance. Again. Her confidence was almost unbelievable. Isabella frowned. “Didn’t you leave?” “I did.” “Then why are you back?” Adriana smiled slowly. “Because I forgot something.” Marco immediately stepped forward. “You shouldn’t be here.” Adriana ignored him completely. Her eyes remained fixed on Isabella. “I wanted to ask you one last question.” Isabella crossed her arms. “What?” Adriana stepped closer. “Do you know what happens to people who marry into this family?” “No.” “They become targets.” A chill ran through Isabella. Adriana leaned slightly closer. “And now,” she whispered, “so are you.” Footsteps sounded behind them. Vincenzo had arrived. His expression was darker than Isabella had ever seen. “Adriana.” Her smile didn’t fade. “Yes?” “Leave.” “But we were having such a nice conversation.” “Now.” For a moment it looked like she might argue. Then she shrugged casually. “Fine.” She walked past him toward the gate. But before leaving, she turned once more toward Isabella. “Welcome to the war.” Then she disappeared. Silence filled the garden again. Isabella slowly exhaled. “Okay,” she said. “That woman is terrifying.” Vincenzo looked at her carefully. “Did she threaten you?” “Yes.” His jaw tightened slightly. “What exactly did she say?” “That I’m a target now.” His eyes darkened. Then he stepped closer to Isabella. Close enough that she could see the intensity in his gaze. “She’s wrong about one thing.” “What?” “You’re not alone.” Something about the way he said it felt like a promise. A dangerous promise. And for the first time since this whole situation started… Isabella felt slightly safer.
