The Trap

The message changed everything. By morning, the Romano estate was no longer just guarded. It was on edge. Every movement felt watched. Every sound carried weight. Isabella hadn’t slept. The image on the phone the one of her standing outside the car, unaware she was being watched kept replaying in her mind. It wasn’t just the picture. It was what it meant. They were always one step ahead. She stood by the window, arms folded tightly, staring out at the gates. “You should rest.” Vincenzo’s voice came from behind her. She didn’t turn. “I’m not tired.” “That’s not true.” “Then I don’t want to sleep.” A pause. “Fair enough.” She finally glanced at him. “You don’t sleep either, do you?” “Not when things are like this.” She gave a small nod. “Good. Then we’re both making bad decisions.” That almost made him smile. Almost. Marco entered the room without knocking. “We have something.” Both of them turned immediately. “What is it?” Vincenzo asked. Marco held up a tablet. “One of our contacts picked up movement near the docks.” Isabella frowned. “The docks?” Marco nodded. “There’s a warehouse. Recently used. No official records.” Vincenzo’s expression hardened. “Who’s there?” “That’s the thing,” Marco said. “We don’t know. But” He hesitated. “But what?” “There’s activity that matches the kind of operation Adrian used to run.” Silence. Heavy. Immediate. Isabella felt it. That name again. Adrian. Vincenzo stepped forward. “Location.” Marco handed him the tablet. “Here.” Vincenzo studied it briefly. Then “We’re going.” Isabella straightened. “We?” “No.” She blinked. “No?” “You’re staying here.” Her expression shifted instantly. “Absolutely not.” Vincenzo didn’t even look at her. “It’s not a discussion.” “Then you clearly don’t know me very well,” she shot back. Marco glanced between them, already sensing where this was going. “This is dangerous,” Vincenzo said. “So is staying here,” she replied immediately. “You literally just told me I’m a target.” “You are.” “Then why would I stay in one place where I’m easier to find?” That made him pause. Just for a second. “I’ll be with you,” she added. “At least then I know what’s happening.” “No.” Her frustration spiked. “You don’t get to keep shutting me out every time something happens!” “I’m trying to keep you alive.” “And I’m trying to not feel like I’m just waiting to be attacked again!” The words came out sharper than she intended. But they were honest. And they hit. Silence followed. Tense. Real. Then Marco spoke carefully. “She has a point.” Vincenzo looked at him. “You’re siding with her?” “I’m saying she’s not safer alone.” Another pause. Then A quiet exhale. Vincenzo turned back to Isabella. “You stay close.” Her shoulders relaxed slightly. “I can do that.” “And you follow instructions.” She hesitated. “…mostly.” His look said everything. “Fine,” she muttered. “Yes.” The docks were quiet. Too quiet. The kind of quiet that didn’t feel natural. The kind that felt staged. Isabella stepped out of the car, the cold air hitting her instantly. “This feels like a bad idea,” she said under her breath. “It probably is,” Marco replied. “Comforting.” Vincenzo scanned the area. “Stay behind me.” She nodded. This time, she didn’t argue. The warehouse stood ahead of them large, dark, and silent. No lights. No visible guards. Nothing. Which somehow made it worse. “Clear?” Marco asked quietly. “Too clear,” Vincenzo said. Isabella’s chest tightened. “That’s not good, right?” “No.” They moved forward slowly. Step by step. Every sound echoed slightly in the stillness. The door to the warehouse was slightly open. Just enough. Like an invitation. Marco stopped. “That’s not normal.” “No,” Vincenzo agreed. Isabella’s heart was already beating faster. “This is a trap.” Vincenzo didn’t deny it. Instead He pushed the door open. Inside, the warehouse was dimly lit. Shadows stretched across the floor. Empty crates lined the walls. But there was something else. Something off. Isabella stepped in slowly, her eyes scanning the space. “It’s empty…” “Too empty,” Marco said. Then A click. Loud. Sharp. Echoing. Isabella froze. “What was that?” The doors slammed shut behind them. Her heart jumped. “Okay definitely a trap!” Lights flickered on suddenly. Blinding at first. Then steady. And that’s when they saw them. Men. Positioned above. Around. Every exit blocked. Weapons raised. Isabella’s breath caught. “Oh no…” Marco moved instantly, pulling his gun. “We’re surrounded.” Vincenzo’s voice was calm. Too calm. “I can see that.” A slow clap echoed from the upper level. Isabella looked up. And her stomach dropped. “Wait…” A familiar face stepped forward. Someone she recognized. Someone who had been there. From the beginning. “No way…” she whispered. The man smiled. “I was wondering how long it would take.” Marco’s expression darkened instantly. “…You.” Vincenzo didn’t move. But his voice It changed. Cold. Deadly. “Explain.” The man tilted his head slightly. “Do I really have to?” Isabella felt her chest tighten. Because she knew that face. She trusted that face. And that made it worse. Vincenzo’s eyes never left the man. A chill ran through Isabella. She had never seen him like this controlled, deadly, but trembling with something she couldn’t name. “Marco… who is he?” she whispered. Marco’s jaw tightened. “One of ours… he shouldn’t be here.” Vincenzo’s voice was low, slicing through the tension. “He’s the traitor.” Her stomach dropped. “What?” The man on the balcony laughed softly. “I see the lady finally notices. It only took you a while.” Isabella’s pulse quickened. She looked at Vincenzo. His hands clenched at his sides. For a moment, she thought he might move too fast, too reckless but he didn’t. He was waiting. Watching. Calculating. The traitor stepped forward, the dim light catching the smirk on his face. He was someone she had trusted… someone she had laughed with, trained with, shared moments with. “You trusted me,” the man said. “Funny how quickly that changes in this world.” Vincenzo finally spoke, voice tight. “How long?” “Long enough to learn all your weaknesses,” the traitor said. “Long enough to know how to break you… and your precious little ally.” He nodded at Isabella. She felt her knees weaken. “You… you could never,” she whispered, a trembling mix of fear and anger in her voice. “Oh, but I can,” the man said. “And I will, unless he gives up what’s rightfully mine.” Vincenzo’s jaw tightened. “And what’s that?” “The control you stole. The empire I deserved.” “Not happening,” Vincenzo said, stepping forward. “You’ll have to stop me first,” the traitor said, then motioned. In a flash, two guards came from the shadows, moving toward Isabella. She barely had time to react before they grabbed her. Struggling, kicking, screaming but outnumbered. She felt a sharp pressure on her arm, pulling her back. Vincenzo’s voice roared, filled with fury. “Let her go!” But the moment stretched too long. A gunshot rang. Isabella flinched, a scream caught in her throat. She turned, heart hammering, to see Marco diving to the side. Chaos erupted. Shots echoed. Men scrambled. But in the confusion, the traitor used the distraction to disappear along with Isabella’s captors. Vincenzo’s breath came hard. His eyes blazed, scanning every corner. “Damn it!” “Where is she?” Marco shouted. “Gone,” Vincenzo ground out, fists clenching. His voice was ice. Cold. Deadly. “He has her. And he’s taking her somewhere… somewhere I will find her.” Isabella, bound and shoved into a waiting car, tried to remain calm. Every instinct screamed at her to fight, but the men around her were strong. Her mind raced. Think. Plan. Survive. Because even if Vincenzo was coming, she couldn’t wait. She had to be ready for what came next. The car started moving. Her heart pounded as the city blurred past. Somewhere out there… Adrian’s or the traitor’s plan was unfolding. And Isabella realized, with chilling clarity, that nothing would ever be the same again. Not for her. Not for Vincenzo. And the war silent, personal, merciless was only just beginning.
