Blood Heir

Elara’s POV The words echoed across the hospital parking lot. “Surrender the Blood Heir… or this city falls before sunset.” Blood Heir? I looked behind me. Then to my left. Surely they weren’t talking about… Me. “This has to be some mistake.” Nobody answered. Kael’s security team had already formed a defensive circle around us. Their movements were frighteningly synchronized. Each man drew a sleek black weapon unlike any firearm I’d ever seen. Silver symbols glowed along the barrels before fading again. My pulse hammered. What kind of people were these? The helicopter hovered lower. Its blades whipped my hair across my face. The hooded figure remained perfectly still. Waiting. Kael finally spoke. “Stay behind me.” It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t dramatic. Yet every person around him obeyed instantly. “I don’t understand any of this!” I shouted over the roaring blades. “Who are they?” No one answered me. “What is a Blood Heir? Still nothing. My frustration boiled over. “Would somebody answer me for once?” Kael turned his head slightly. “Later.” I almost screamed. “I am so tired of ‘later!’” A faint chuckle came from somewhere behind us. I blinked. One of Kael’s men… Actually laughed. It was so unexpected that everyone turned to look at him. The poor man immediately straightened. “My apologies, Sovereign.” His face had gone completely pale. “I…” He swallowed hard. “It won’t happen again.” To my surprise… Kael simply looked away. No punishment, no anger. Nothing. The guard released the breath he’d been holding. That tiny exchange told me something. These people feared Kael more than death itself. Suddenly, the loudspeaker crackled again. “You have sixty seconds.” The hooded figure’s voice was distorted, impossible to identify. “Hand over the girl.” “Or watch this city burn.” A cold knot settled in my stomach. This couldn’t be real. It felt like I’d stepped into someone else’s nightmare. Kael raised his eyes to the helicopter. “You’ve crossed a line.” His voice remained calm. The figure laughed. “You no longer command the world alone, Ashryx.” A heavy silence followed. Then Kael asked one question. “Who gave you permission to speak my name?” The surrounding temperature seemed to plummet. The hooded figure stopped laughing. For the first time… They hesitated. One second. Two. Three. Then— Without warning— Kael lifted one hand. He didn’t shout. He didn’t transform. He simply snapped his fingers. The helicopter’s engine exploded. A thunderous blast ripped through the sky. Flames swallowed one side of the aircraft as it spun violently out of formation. People screamed, the remaining helicopters scattered in panic. I stared at Kael in complete disbelief. He hadn’t touched it. He hadn’t fired a weapon. He had only... Snapped. The burning helicopter struggled to regain control before crashing into the empty field beyond the hospital, sending a column of black smoke into the afternoon sky. The silence that followed was terrifying. Kael lowered his hand as though nothing extraordinary had happened. Then he looked at me. “Now…” His silver eyes held mine. “Do you understand why you cannot leave my side?” “No.” The answer escaped before I could stop it. “I don’t understand anything.” My voice shook. “I watched you destroy a helicopter with a snap of your fingers.” I pointed toward the burning wreckage in the distance. “People don’t do that.” Kael didn’t even look at the flames. “They do.” “No.” “They do.” I stared at him in disbelief. “You’re impossible.” “So I’ve been told.” Another explosion echoed from the crash site. Black smoke climbed into the sky. Hospital staff rushed frightened patients toward emergency exits while police sirens wailed from every direction. Within minutes, the area would be crawling with authorities. Yet none of Kael’s men looked concerned. One of them stepped forward. “My Sovereign.” “The media will arrive in less than four minutes.” “I know.” “The Council?” “They’ve already been informed.” The guard hesitated. “And the human government?” Kael’s expression never changed. “They’ll remember what they’re permitted to remember.” My stomach tightened. “What does that mean?” He looked at me. “It means tomorrow’s headlines won’t mention today.” I laughed. A short, nervous laugh. “That’s ridiculous. No one laughed with me. Every face remained perfectly serious. A horrible thought crept into my mind. He wasn’t joking. How much power did this man actually have? A sleek black sedan screeched into the parking lot. An elderly gentleman climbed out, dressed in an immaculate charcoal suit with white gloves. Despite his age, his posture was flawless. The moment he reached Kael, he bowed deeply. “My Sovereign.” Kael inclined his head. “Report.” “The mansion is secured.” The old man spoke with quiet precision. “The eastern perimeter has been reinforced.” “The northern watchtowers are operational.” “The household has assembled.” He paused. “They’re waiting to receive their Lady.” Lady? I blinked. “I’m nobody’s lady.” The old man’s warm brown eyes shifted to me. There was kindness in them. Real kindness. He bowed respectfully. “Forgive me, my Lady.” “I…” I glanced at Kael. “This is insane.” “No.” Kael answered calmly. “It is law.” “There you go again!” I threw my hands into the air. “Law! Sovereign! Blood Heir! House Ashryx!” My frustration finally spilled over. “I don’t know what any of it means!” “I didn’t ask for any of this!” “I just wanted to save my grandfather!” The parking lot fell silent. Even Kael’s guards lowered their eyes. My breathing turned ragged. “I had a normal life this morning.” Tears blurred my vision. “I had bills.” “I had work.” “I had my grandfather.” I wiped angrily at my face. “And now…” I looked around at the armed men. The helicopters. The burning wreckage. The strange symbols. The silver eyed billionaire standing in front of me. “I’m standing in the middle of a nightmare.” For the first time since we’d met… Kael took one slow step toward me. His voice, when he spoke, was quieter than before. “No.” I frowned through my tears. “What do you mean, no?” “You were standing in a nightmare.” His gaze shifted toward the smoking helicopter. “This…” He looked back at me. “is your awakening.” Before I could ask what that meant, a piercing scream ripped through the air. Everyone turned. One of the nurses stumbled out of the hospital, pointing toward the intensive care wing. “T-the patient…” She could barely breathe. “The old man…” My blood froze. Grandpa. Without thinking, I ran. “Miss Vale!” someone shouted behind me. I ignored them. My shoes pounded against the pavement as I raced through the hospital doors. Please… Please let him be okay. I reached his room and shoved the door open. The bed… Was empty. The heart monitor had been disconnected. The IV stand lay on its side. A single white rose rested neatly on the pillow. Beneath it… A black envelope sealed with a crimson wax crest. My shaking fingers opened it. Inside was one handwritten sentence. “If the Sovereign wants the Blood Heir… let him earn her.”
