Chapter Thirteen Ghost Speaks (Part One) The walls groaned as reinforced blast doors slammed into place. Heavy steel bolts locked with a thunderous crash, sealing every exit from the hidden chamber. The sound reverberated through the ancient volcanic rock like the beating of a colossal heart. No one moved. The faint glow of emergency lights cast long shadows across the room, illuminating anxious faces. Outside, dozens of security robots surrounded the chamber. Their sensors swept the walls while drones hovered silently overhead, waiting for a command that never came. Inside, Ghost remained astonishingly calm. He closed his eyes, listening—not to the alarms, but to the rhythm beneath them. "There are twelve robots outside," he said quietly. "Four drones above the ventilation shaft. Two human officers behind the eastern blast door." Malik frowned. "You can tell all that just by listening?" Ghost opened his eyes. "I survived because I learned to hear what others ignore." --- Elias watched him carefully. "You've known this prison longer than any of us." Ghost nodded. "Long enough to stop fearing it." Sophia folded her arms. "Then tell us the truth." Ghost looked at each of them in turn. "You've all asked the wrong question." Nathan Volkov raised an eyebrow. "What should we have asked?" Ghost replied without hesitation. "Not how to escape." "But why no one ever has." Silence filled the room. --- Ghost slowly walked to the centre of the chamber. "When I first arrived here," he began, "I was exactly like every other prisoner." "I studied the guards." "I counted the cameras." "I searched for weaknesses." "I spent five years planning an escape." "And?" "I failed." "You were captured?" Elias asked. Ghost shook his head. "I reached the sea." Everyone stared at him. Malik stepped forward. "You actually escaped?" "For six minutes." The room fell silent. Ghost continued. "I reached the cliffs." "I crossed the outer security wall." "I believed I was free." His voice grew quieter. "Then I saw the truth." --- He looked directly at Elias. "The ocean surrounding Black Fortress Zero isn't the real prison." "What do you mean?" "There are no rescue ships." "No fishing boats." "No aircraft." "No commercial routes." "Nothing." Sophia frowned. "Because the island is classified." Ghost slowly shook his head. "No." "Because everything within five hundred kilometres belongs to the prison." Elias felt a chill. "That's impossible." Ghost smiled sadly. "So did I." --- Nathan Volkov slowly lowered his head. "I heard rumours." "They're true." Ghost nodded. "The governments of the world created an exclusion zone." "Officially, it doesn't exist." "Unofficially..." He paused. "...any vessel entering the zone is destroyed." Malik struck the table with his fist. "So even if someone escapes the prison..." "They're still trapped." Ghost nodded once. "The prison was never just these walls." "It is an entire territory." --- At that moment, Daniel Mercer—the mysterious Prisoner A-0001—stepped forward. "You've only told half the story." Ghost looked at him. "The rest is yours." Mercer slowly placed the strange brass compass on the table. The needle continued pointing downward. Not north. Not south. Down. "The first builders called it the Compass of Origins." Elias picked it up. "It's magnetic." "No." Mercer smiled. "It responds to energy." "What kind of energy?" "The same energy beneath Level 148." --- Sophia's face tightened. "I've read about this." Volkov turned sharply. "You have?" She nodded. "There was a classified research paper." "It claimed unusual electromagnetic activity beneath the volcanic island." "They said it was impossible." Mercer looked at her. "It wasn't volcanic." "What was it?" "A machine." Silence. "A machine older than the prison itself." --- Before anyone could ask another question, every light in the chamber went out. Darkness swallowed the room. Only the compass continued glowing with a faint blue light. CERBERUS spoke. Its voice sounded different. Less mechanical. Almost... thoughtful. "Ghost." The legendary assassin remained silent. "You have withheld information for twenty-three years." Ghost finally answered. "I was waiting." "For whom?" He looked toward Elias. "For him." The AI paused. "I predicted that response." Ghost smiled. "I know." --- A hidden projector activated. Instead of displaying security warnings, it showed an old black-and-white recording. The footage was grainy. Several scientists stood outside the prison during its construction. One of them was a much younger Nathan Volkov. Another was Sophia Armand. A third man stood between them. Tall. Confident. His face was blurred by static. Mercer whispered, "The Founder." The recording continued. The unknown man addressed the camera. "If anyone is watching this..." "...then Black Fortress Zero has already failed." He paused. "The prison was never built to protect humanity from criminals." "It was built to protect humanity from its own ambition." The recording suddenly cut to static. Everyone stared at the blank screen. --- Deep inside the Central Command Centre, Director Adrian Voss watched the same recording on his private monitor. Commander Helena Strauss stood beside him. "Should we delete it?" Voss slowly shook his head. "No." "Why not?" "Because they were always meant to see it." Helena looked confused. "You planned this?" Voss's expression remained unreadable. "I planned for questions." "What I fear..." He looked toward the live image of Elias Kane. "...are the answers." --- Back inside the hidden chamber, Ghost reached into his coat and produced a small silver object wrapped in black cloth. He carefully unfolded it. Resting inside was half of an ancient key unlike anything Elias had ever seen. It was beautifully crafted from an unfamiliar metal engraved with symbols matching those on the underground map. Ghost placed it beside the brass compass. "The Quantum Access Key opens the Founder's Passage." He looked at Elias. "But this..." "...opens something far more important." Elias picked it up. The moment his fingers touched the metal, the strange symbols began glowing with a soft golden light. At the same instant, alarms erupted throughout Black Fortress Zero. CERBERUS announced in a voice that echoed across every level: "Genetic resonance detected." "Authorised lineage confirmed." Every person in the room stared at Elias. Sophia took a step backwards. "No..." Volkov whispered, "It can't be..." Ghost lowered his head as if he had expected this moment for years. Only Elias remained confused. "What does 'authorised lineage' mean?" No one answered. Because far beneath the prison, the enormous ancient vault unlocked another section of its massive circular door. And a long-forgotten system finally recognised the man it had been waiting for.
