My heart pounded in my chest as Conrad held my chin, his piercing gaze boring into mine. I could feel the heat radiating off of his body, and I was acutely aware of our nakedness.
"Mari, I don't believe you," he said, his voice low and intense. "You're not the Luna of your pack. I can tell by the way you carry yourself, by the way the other wolves treat you. Why are you lying to me?"
I swallowed hard, my mind racing as I tried to come up with a plausible explanation. But the truth was, I wasn't the Luna. I was just a lowly omega, barely tolerated by the rest of the pack.
"I-I'm not lying," I stammered, trying to keep my voice steady. "I am the Luna. I swear it."
Conrad's eyes narrowed, and he leaned in closer, his lips just inches from mine. "Don't lie to me, Mari," he whispered. "Lying will only create more lies. And I can't trust someone who lies to me."
I felt a lump form in my throat, and I knew that he was right. But I was too afraid to admit the truth, to reveal my lowly status to this powerful alpha.
Conrad must have sensed my hesitation, because he gently took my face in his hands and pressed his lips to mine. It was a soft, lingering kiss, and I felt a jolt of electricity run through my body.
When he pulled away, he was staring at me intently, his eyes searching mine.
I could feel my heart pounding in my chest as Conrad's face came closer to mine, his breath hot on my lips. He was so close that I could feel the heat radiating off of his body, and I was acutely aware of our nakedness.
"Mari," he said, his voice low and commanding. "Are you being forced to marry Alphanya?"
I tried to steady my breathing as I looked into his piercing gaze. I knew that I couldn't lie to him, not again. But I also couldn't tell him the truth.
"No," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
Conrad's eyes narrowed as he studied my face. He could tell that I was hiding something, and he wasn't going to let it go.
"Don't lie to me, Mari," he said, his voice taking on a dangerous edge. "I can smell the fear on you. Are you being forced to marry him against your will?"
I felt a lump form in my throat as I tried to come up with a response. The man in front of me was too dominating, too powerful. I felt like I was being backed into a corner.
Suddenly, Conrad leaned in and licked his own lips. I felt a jolt of electricity run through my body, and I knew that I had to do something.
Without thinking, I raised my hand and slapped him across the face. The sound echoed through the place, and for a moment, everything was still.
But then, to my surprise, Conrad smiled. It was a slow, satisfied smile that sent a shiver down my spine.
"Good," he said, his voice low and intense. "That's the fire I was looking for. You may not be the Luna, Mari, but you're not a weakling either. I can work with that."
As Conrad spoke, my mind raced to make sense of his words. The cake that had given everyone stomach aches, the smell of cow dung, and even the fact that I had been doused with cow dung liquid - it all suddenly made sense. Someone had been trying to sabotage my wedding, and it was clear that they had gone to great lengths to do so.
But why was Conrad telling me this? And why did he seem so amused by it all?
As I looked into his eyes, I saw a cruel grin spread across his handsome face. He was enjoying this, enjoying watching me squirm as I tried to make sense of it all.
"Mari," he said, his voice low and dangerous. "Do you want to be a bad person?"
I was stunned. What did he mean by that? Was he suggesting that I had something to do with the sabotage?
"No," I stammered, trying to keep my voice steady. "Of course not. I don't know who would do such a thing."
Conrad's grin widened. "Really?" he said, his tone mocking. "Because it seems to me that someone in your pack is trying to make you look weak. And if you're not careful, they just might succeed."
I felt a chill run down my spine. Was it possible that someone in my pack was trying to undermine me? And if so, who could it be?
As I looked into Conrad's eyes, I saw a flicker of something that looked like genuine concern. But then it was gone, replaced by that same cruel grin.
"Mari," he said, his voice softening slightly. "I can help you. But you have to be honest with me. Do you understand?"
I nodded slowly, my mind racing. I didn't know what was going on, but I knew that I couldn't trust Conrad. He was too dangerous, too unpredictable.
But at the same time, I couldn't deny that he was right. Someone in my pack was trying to make me look weak, and I needed to find out who it was before it was too late.
"So, are you saying you want to be evil?" I asked as I climbed out of the river and hastily dressed. Conrad could only be heard chuckling softly, as if amused by my question.
"No, I don't want to be evil," I replied firmly, shooting a glance in his direction.
"Well, be careful then," Conrad warned, his voice barely audible. "You wouldn't want to tempt fate and end up with the worst kind of bad luck."
With that, I quickly made my way out of the area, eager to put some distance between myself and Conrad's unsettling words.
