THE KEY

The drive back to the mansion was silent. Serena sat beside Damian, staring through the window as the city lights blurred past. His words kept replaying in her mind. You're the key. What did that mean? She finally turned toward him. “What am I carrying?” Damian didn't look at her. “I don't know.” “You said someone thinks I'm the key.” “yes.” “Then find out.” “I will.” “Damian.” His eyes met hers. “I said I'll find out.” She looked away. “I hate not knowing what's happening. Silence.” “I hate being protected without being told why.” “silence.” She frowned. “You keep mute without altering a word .” “Because I do.” His voice softened. “I'm not trying to control you, Serena.” She looked at him. “Then what are you trying to do?” “Keep you alive.” There was something about the way he said it that made her anger fade. She looked down at her hands. “Thank you.” Damian reached for her hand. Their fingers intertwined. Neither of them spoke again. But neither let go. --- THE LOCKED ROOM When they arrived at the mansion, Damian took Serena upstairs. “Where are we going?” “To my office.” “Why?” “I need to show you something.” He unlocked a door she had never seen opened before. Inside was a private study. Dark wood. Bookshelves. Old photographs. A large safe stood against the wall. Damian walked toward it. He entered a code. The safe opened. Inside was a small black folder. He removed it. “This belonged to my brother.” Serena stared. “You kept it?” “Yes.” “Why didn't you open it?” “I did.” “And?” “There were things I couldn't understand.” He handed it to her. Serena opened the folder. Inside were photographs, financial records, and handwritten notes. Then she saw something familiar. The symbol on her necklace. She touched the page. “This.” Damian nodded. “My brother wrote about it.” “What does it mean?” “He called it the Black Rose.” Serena frowned. “Black Rose?” “Yes.” “Then why did the letter say Blue Rose?” “I don't know.” She turned another page. A sentence had been underlined. THE BLACK ROSE IS NOT AN OBJECT. IT IS A PERSON. Serena's heart began racing. “Damian…” He looked over her shoulder. His expression changed. “No.” “What?” He took the folder from her. “That's impossible.” “What is?” “My brother believed the Black Rose was a person.” “And?” “He thought the person was connected to your father.” Serena stared at him. “Me?” Damian didn't answer. She stepped closer. “Do you think I'm the Black Rose?” “I don't know.” “Then why are you looking at me like that?” “Because I'm beginning to think your father knew more about you than you ever did.” --- THE MEMORY That night, Serena couldn't sleep. She sat on the edge of the bed. Her father's photograph was in her hands. She stared at it. “Why didn't you tell me?” A memory suddenly surfaced. She was twelve years old. Her father had taken her into his office. He had given her the same necklace. She remembered his words. “Never take this off.” Serena's eyes widened. She touched the necklace. Then another memory came. Her father had looked frightened. “If anything happens to me, don't trust anyone.” She had forgotten. How could she have forgotten? Serena stood quickly. She rushed toward the door. Damian was standing outside. She nearly collided with him. “What happened?” “My father gave me this necklace when I was twelve.” Damian looked at it. “Why?” “I don't know.” “What else do you remember?” She closed her eyes. “He told me never to take it off.” Damian's expression darkened. “Anything else?” “He said not to trust anyone.” “Even him?” “I don't know.” Damian gently took her shoulders. “Think.” Serena tried. Then— She remembered something. “A room.” “What room?” “My father's office.” “Here?” “No.” She shook her head. “An old house.” “What house?” “I don't know.” “Serena.” She looked at him. “I was little.” Damian softened. “It's okay.” She suddenly grabbed his shirt. “I remember a door.” “What was behind it?” “I don't know.” Her breathing became unsteady. Damian pulled her into his arms. “That's enough.” “I want to remember.” “You will.” “How can you be sure?” “Because I'll help you.” She looked up at him. Their faces were close. “Why?” “Because I don't want you carrying this alone.” Her eyes softened. “Damian…” He brushed his thumb across her cheek. “You need to sleep.” “I can't.” “Then stay with me.” Her heart skipped. “What?” He hesitated. “Not like that.” She smiled faintly. “I know.” He led her to the sitting room. They sat together on the sofa. Serena leaned against his shoulder. And he was rubbing hair gently and slowly Minutes passed. Then hours. She eventually fell asleep. Damian looked down at her. For the first time in years, the Mafia King felt completely powerless. Because the woman sleeping against him had become the one thing he couldn't afford to lose. --- THE MORNING AFTER Serena woke to sunlight. Her head was resting on Damian's chest. She immediately sat up. “You stayed?” Damian opened his eyes. “You fell asleep.” “You could have left.” “I didn't want to.” Her cheeks warmed. “Why?” He looked at her. “Because I like having you close.” She smiled. “That's dangerous.” “I know.” She stood. Then noticed something on the floor. A photograph. She picked it up. Her blood ran cold. It was an old photograph of her father. But he wasn't alone. Beside him stood Damian's brother. And behind them— A woman. Serena stared at her. “Who is she?” Damian took the photograph. His face became completely still. “I don't know.” Serena looked closer. “I've seen her before.” “Where?” “In my mother's room.” Damian looked at her. “Are you sure?” “Yes.” “Serena, think carefully.” She nodded. “She was in an old photograph.” Damian's eyes narrowed. “Your mother knows her.” “I think so.” She called for her mother immediately They immediately went downstairs. Her mother was sitting at the table. Serena placed the photograph in front of her. Her mother's face went pale. “Where did you get this?” “Dad's office.” Her mother stared at the woman. Then whispered: “She's alive.” Serena's heart stopped. “Who is she?” Her mother looked at Damian. Then back at Serena. “She was your father's closest friend.” “What's her name?” Her mother swallowed. “Isabella Romano.” Damian froze. “My mother?” Serena stared at him. His mother had been dead for years. Or so everyone believed. His mother's name was Isabella Romano. And suddenly, the photograph made no sense. Until Serena's mother whispered: “Isabella didn't die.” Damian's face hardened. “Where is she?” His mother looked terrified. “I don't know.” A phone rang. Damian answered. His security chief's voice came through. “Boss, we found something.” “What?” “An old security recording.” “From where?” “The night your brother died.” Damian went silent. The guard continued. “There's a woman in the footage.” “Who?” “We believe it's Isabella Romano.” Damian looked at Serena. The mystery had just become more dangerous. Because if his mother was alive— Then someone had lied to him for six years. And the person who had hidden her might be the same person who destroyed Serena's family. END OF CHAPTER SIX
