CHAPTER 3: REBORN IN SHADOWS

940 Words
Raven’s POV Pain was the first thing I felt... Low, heavy, dragging pain beneath my ribs and deep in my bones. I forced my eyes open slowly as a dull ache pulsed through my body. My head throbbed, my throat was dry, and my limbs felt weak, like they didn’t belong to me. I pushed myself up carefully, wincing at the stiffness in my muscles. The last thing I remembered was… blood… screaming… cold wind and a cliff... I gasped sharply, and my hand flew to my stomach, where I had been stabbed over and over again. I pulled the blanket aside and lifted the loose shirt I was wearing. My breath caught. Smooth skin stared back at me. No wounds, no scars. Not even a scratch. I dragged my fingers over my stomach again, harder this time. Nothing; my body was… untouched, healed. Perfect. “How...” I whispered. “How am I alive?” I looked around in confusion. I was in a rustic wooden cabin, with a warm fire burning, leather chairs, and a single bed I was lying on. It didn’t smell like any hospital or any pack I remembered. Nothing was familiar. Then I saw it... the mirror on the far wall. My heart began to race. I stumbled out of bed, nearly losing balance as I reached for it. I gripped the wooden frame and forced myself to lift my eyes to the reflection. I froze. That wasn’t my face. Gone were the soft features of Mira Gabriel... the plain omega girl with brown hair and soulful eyes. The woman staring back had long black hair, piercing silver eyes, high cheekbones, and lips that looked too fierce to tremble... This woman was dangerous, sharp, and unbreakable. “I... I...” My voice trembled. “That’s not me…” I stepped back in horror. “WHAT HAPPENED TO ME?" The door burst open, and a tall, powerfully built man strode in. Dark hair, strong jaw, and cold, ruthless aura. He looked like he could command armies with a single word. He stared at me, surprised. “Oh. You are awake.” He stepped closer; his eyes were scanning mine. “Raven...are you alright?” “Raven?” I blinked. “Who’s Raven?” My voice came out panicked. I staggered back. “Wait, who are you? Where am I?" He paused, then laughed like I had just told a ridiculous joke. “Very funny,” he said, shaking his head with a smirk. I didn’t laugh. His smile faded slowly; he studied me again, and this time his expression hardened. “You’re… serious.” “Dead serious,” I whispered. “I don’t know you, I don’t know this place, and I am not...Raven.” He exhaled, staring at me worriedly, and for a long moment, he didn’t speak. Then he said slowly, “This is unexpected.” He stepped closer but kept his voice calm and firm... alpha-like. “You are Raven Riley, and I am Alpha Dante Mathias of IronFang.” Alpha. IronFang. Rogue pack. I had heard of them before... ghost stories, really. A rogue army no one could locate but everyone feared. “IronFang?” I repeated, numb. “And you,” he continued, voice lowering, “are my second, my right hand, my elite.” I stared at him. Second? Right hand? Elite? He began pacing like a caged wolf. “You followed a mission lead with Bram, Kellan, Zane, and three others, but it was a trap, and I almost lost you.” His jaw clenched, emotion slipping through his mask. “That will never happen again; I shouldn't have let you leave. If you ever go on missions again, I will train you myself, and I won’t let you out of my sight again until I know you are safe.” His voice was deep and controlled, but beneath it, I heard it clearly... fear. Whoever Raven Riley was to him… she mattered. Deeply. I swallowed hard. “I’m sorry,” I whispered, shaking my head slowly. “But I don’t remember any of that. I don’t even know who I am anymore.” His eyes searched mine, but he didn’t argue; he didn’t question. He just nodded once. “I will call the pack doctor. You have suffered head trauma, so memory loss is not rare after the impact. You will recover.” He moved toward me and took my hand gently. I froze as his lips brushed my knuckles... Brief, controlled, but deeply intimate. “No one will hurt you again,” he said softly, eyes locking onto mine. “Not while I still breathe.” He said confidently, and for some reason, I believed every word. Then he turned and walked out, closing the door behind him. I stared after him for too long, then I went back to the mirror... I lifted a trembling hand to my face. This wasn’t magic, this wasn’t luck, and this wasn’t normal. This was a second chance. My voice trembled, but I spoke into the empty room. “I survived the accusations, the rejection, the banishment, the stabbing, and the fall.” My eyes hardened. “The Mira they betrayed died in those woods.” I touched the unfamiliar reflection, slowly but firmly. “And Raven was born.” My blood turned to steel. “I will rise, I will never kneel again, I will never beg again, and by the time I am done…” I leaned in, eyes cold and certain. "...they will pray the dead Mira stays buried because Raven will become their worst nightmare."
