I wake up the next morning soaking wet, and realize it’s from Alex sweating. I sit up and lean over him to check his pulse. Still steady. Slower than normal, but steady. I check the clock and see that it’s shortly after seven in the morning, so I climb out of bed and take a quick shower to wake me up. I throw on a pair of black spandex shorts, a solid black bra and a red tank top. After I tame my hair I start brushing my teeth. I stop and stare into the mirror when I notice the mark on my neck has a few more swirls to it. I jump as I hear a loud thud come from the bedroom and run out of the bathroom in a panic.
“Good morning my love.” Alex stands up from the floor and shakes his head and sits back on the bed. “How was your sleep?” He talks as if nothing happened and I jump into his arms and throw us backwards onto the bed.
“You’re awake! How do you feel? Are you okay?” I pound him with questions and he laughs as he sits up.
“I feel… different. Still the same me, but different. Killer headache though.” He rubs his temple and winces. “I feel like I got hit by a bus.” I get off the bed and throw the curtains open. The bright morning sun shines into our room and I stand in front of the window with my hand out.
“Come here, I want to see something.” He raises an eyebrow but listens to my request and takes my hand as he steps into the sun. I see his mark has changed too, and when I look up at him, I see he his left eye is not longer his piercing blue, but matches my intricate colours perfectly. “Alex, look!” I drag him to the bathroom and shove him in front of the mirror. He stares at his mark and traces it with his fingers. He laughs and holds my hand. “No, look.” I turn his face towards the mirror again, and point to his eyes.
“I… what? What does this mean? It’s the same as yours…?” He’s as confused as I am, and he can’t stop looking at himself.
“I don’t know. Maybe my blood is still working against your genes? Maybe it’s changing because your vampire genes are going away.” I frown and hope that isn’t true, as I love his crystal blue eyes when he looks at me with all the love in the world. “Let’s get you cleaned up and start the day. We can read the book later and if there’s no answers, I’ll try to call my mom. She hasn’t shown up here yet so I’m guessing she’s still out of it.” He nods and strips to get in the shower. I pack our bags and shoot Anna a quick text.
-Mornin sweets.
-hey babes. How was ur sleep
-weird. Talk later. Don’t stare at m8. Leaving in 10.
-okie dokie :-*
I toss my phone on the bed and zip up our suitcases and wheel them over to the door. I hear people talking outside and take a look through the peep hole to find Anna, Lucas, and Anthony standing out in the hall. I open the door and they all jump.
“Well don’t stop talking on my account.” I sneer. “What’re you guys doing out here? Where’s Jack?” I ask.
“Hey Al. Jack’s taking a shower. He should be ready soon.” Lucas shoves his hands in his pocket and stares at Anna. Lucas seems to forget I can tell when he’s lying, and I let out a heavy sigh.
“Anna, where is Jack, really?” I know she won’t lie to me. She points to Lucas.
“What he said?” She’s confused, and my last hope is Anthony.
“Goddess of War and Wisdom, remember? Am I going to have to ask a third time?” I stare in to his eyes, and his face goes white. “Anthony Knight, answer my question.” He clears his throat and out of the corner of my eye I see Anna and Lucas glare at him.
“He stormed out of his and Lucas’ room last night because he smelled your blood. He was punching walls and Lucas and I had to tackle him to the ground. He’s presently chained up in my bathroom. We didn’t want to tell you until you and Alex were already downstairs and we had another chance to talk to him after he calmed down. We think he still has-”
“I’ve heard enough. He smelled my blood because I tried to turn Alex last night. My mother explained a way for us to get rid of his vampire genes, so we gave it a shot. So far, it’s working. Where is your room?” Anthony points to the room across from us. “Okay. I’ll go talk to him.”
“Talk to who? Oh, hey guys. How was everyone’s sleep?” I hear Alex behind me, and I see everyone’s mouth drop open. I see Anna catch herself, and then she smacks Lucas in the arm. Anthony is still staring, so Lucas nudges him too. I turn around and take Alex’s hand in mine so he can focus on me and ignore everyone’s stares.
“Talk to Jack. Apparently,” I glare back at the still shocked trio, and then back to Alex. “He smelled my blood last night and flew into a rage. There’s still Demon Blood running around inside of him, so I’m going to go explain what happened to try and calm him down.” Alex rubs his face and groans. “I think I should talk to him alone. You guys can wait in the room, but I’ll go into the bathroom by myself. I’ll link one of you if I need help, okay?” Everyone but Alex nods, and wraps a protective arm around my waist.
“I don’t want you in there alone. I don’t trust him.” His voice becomes dark, and for a moment I see his eyes flash black.
“You can wait in the bedroom, okay? I promise I’ll call out if I need you.” He hugs me tight and I feel him nod his head. Anthony opens the door to his room, and as I asked, Alex walks to the bed and takes a seat. I can hear banging coming from the bathroom and I sigh as I walk over and knock on the door.
“Unless you have a death wish, let me the f**k out of here!” I hear more banging and I have Anthony unlock the door. Apparently, there’s a rune to lock and unlock doors. Great. I turn the handle and slowly open the door. A roll of toilet paper gets thrown and I slam it shut.
“Can you stop acting like a child for ONE minute so I can open the damn door?! Jesus Jack, really?” All banging and thrashing stops, and I swing the door open. I stand in the doorway with my arms crossed, and Jack’s angry face subsides to frustration. I can see the red marks around his wrists from the cuffs that are looped around the support bar beside the bathtub, and I carefully walk up and sit on the toilet across from him. “Are you done?”
“Get the f**k out of my face. I don’t want to talk, I just want to get the f**k out of here.” He spits his words out, and although some of them hurt I don’t move.
“Can’t do that Jackie. You gotta calm down and talk to me first.” I lean back into my seat and cross a leg over the other. “We can sit here all day, but you and Anna and Lucas are gonna miss your flight home. You’ll also not be un-cuffed until we talk, so the decision is yours.”
He grunts and lets out a loud groan. “I smelled-”
“My blood. Yeah. You’re gonna have to get over that, Jack. My mate is a hybrid. You know this, and have known this since you met him. What you smelled last night was me trying to get rid of his Vampire genes. My mother gave us a few options, and believe it or not, him drinking from me was the safest route. It was that or hunt down some old ass vampire and basically beg for his blood, and then beg Zeus to Bess it. With everything, that happened in Olympus, it would take a very long time to even hope that Zeus would agree to it.” I lean forward on my knees and furrow my brows. “I know it’s hurting you, but there’s nothing that can be changed Jack. He is my mate. I’m marked. You need to smarten up and give your head a shake. You need to stop using, or I swear I’ll kill you myself. I may be the daughter of a Goddess, but I was born into a hunter’s family first.” I feel my face getting hot and full of anger as Jack’s expression turns to a smirk.
“You wouldn’t. Couldn’t. You’d never hurt me more than you already have.” His eyes turn black, and I stand over him.
“I would if you were to threaten my mate. I am DONE, trying to step on eggshells around you.” I grab his collar and lift him up to his knees. “YOU, do not have control anymore. You are DONE hurting people.” I grab his head with both of my hands and squeeze. “By my power I make it so the blood of a demon will make you burn from the inside out.” My hands glow as I speak, and Jack cries out in pain. The bathroom door swings open and I feel two sets of hands trying to pull me away from him. I repeat myself, but this time it flows out in my native tongue. “Apó ti dýnamí mou to ftiáchno, étsi to aíma enós daímona tha se kánei na kápseis apó mésa pros ta éxo.” A big flash of light shines in front of me and I let Jack fall to his knees.
“Ally, what did you do?” Lucas asks over Jack’s cries.
“Any time he tries to drink or inject himself, it’ll burn. It’ll be the worst pain he’s ever felt. I’ll be the only one who can help him.” I crouch down and hold onto Jack’s arm. I focus on the Demon Blood like I had done weeks ago, and start to pull it all out. When I’m done, there’s about a softball sized amount of blood floating in my palm. I start to close my hand into a fist and the giant circle slowly shrinks and puffs into dust. I look to Lucas, and he unlocks Jack’s cuffs. I help him lift Jack out of the bathroom and onto Anthony’s bed.
“I got it from here. You guys go check out and we’ll meet you downstairs.” Lucas rests a hand on my arm and smiles through his watery eyes. “Thank you.” I nod, and the rest of us head down to the lobby.
“Well, that was a crazy way to start the day.” Anna states as we walk away from the front desk.
“Anna, I love you, but if you don’t shut up I’m going to have to hurt you. I’ll shave your head.” She gasps and clamps her hands down on her head. “Well, don’t make me do it!” I reach over and ruffle her perfect red curls and she squeals.
“I can’t believe you would say that. I am hurt!” She throws her hand over her heart and pretends to faint. We all laugh and make our way to the parking garage. Once again we pack everything into the trunks of our vehicles, and Alex and Anthony give Anna a quick hug and wait by the truck so I can say bye to my best friend. I pull away from our hug and Anna and I see Jack and Lucas walking around the corner. “You need to say goodbye to him too.” Anna whispers. I sigh and stand at the trunk of the SUV.
