CHAPTER XVIOnly she had not known he was so big. Enormous. And he wore a black silk kimono, neatly belted around his waist, and reaching to the calves of his bare legs. “How do you do, Miss Peterson?” he said in a cultured voice. “How do you do?” said she. This couldn’t be true, and the sooner she stopped believing it, the better. “Sit down, Miss Peterson,” he said. He had a very cozy little cabin; she saw white ruffled curtains at the ports, and there was a pink and blue rug on the deck, and a patchwork quilt on the bunk. “Won’t you sit down?” he said, giving a slight push to the only chair, a wicker one with a chintz cushion. She realized that she must immediately stop believing in this. “I’m afraid I don’t know your name, Captain,” she said, politely. “Oh, I’m sorry!” he said.
