CHAPTER XVII“Moses,” she said, “get back to town as fast as you can. It’s urgent.” But she knew they could not be fast enough. She was going away, leaving don Carlos to his fate. She thought his choice had been right. She thought it was practical. She thought it was foolish to keep your life at the price of your self-respects It was of no value to you. Only when she thought of him sitting in that cabin… “Mistress, you weep?” “I think so, Moses.” “Launch coming, mistress.” The police? she thought. Oh, if it only would be Losee. If only he’s followed me! But it was only a little boat with an outboard motor, and only one figure in it. The two boats were approaching each other; in the glare of the sun she could see a man in a white suit, and a gray felt hat. “Mister Jeffrey, mistress.”
