The gel was cold against my skin. I flinched, and Kane's hand immediately covered mine.
"It's alright," he murmured, his thumb stroking circles on my wrist. "We're going to see our son today."

I bit my tongue hard enough to taste copper. The healer, an older woman named Miriam, glanced between us with careful neutrality. She'd seen Kane return last night, ash-stained and reeking of smoke. Everyone had.
