CHAPTER 4 THE CONTRACT

1207 Words
The weight of the contract in front of me was like a thousand pounds as I sat at the big, shiny table. Each of the neatly organized documents symbolized a facet of my life that I was ready to give up. This is not how I had anticipated it to feel. There was no elaborate ceremony or protracted debate. All I could see was the emotionless, frigid reality that Lucas had shown to me. "Are you prepared?" I was startled when Lucas's voice cut through the room's quiet. His demeanor was as impenetrable as ever as he sat across from me, but today was different. Something that disturbed me. With my heart hammering against my ribs, I looked up at him. "I'm not sure I'll ever be prepared for this." His eyes narrowed slightly as he c****d his head. "Sophia, you have no other option." Like a sour memory, their words lingered in the air. It wasn't my intention to be here. I had an option, so I wasn't seated across from him. I felt compelled to be here. As he handed the contract in my direction, Lucas said, "Everything is in order." "The transaction is finalized once you sign." With my hands shaking, I stretched out and gazed at the pages before me. Like an anchor dragging me into the abyss, the pen felt heavy in my hands. I wanted to withdraw. This wasn't right, and I wanted to shout it. I realized there was no other option when I remembered my mother lying in that antiseptic hospital room. Lucas had a solution in mind. A means of escape. A solution to the whole problem. But at what price? His gaze darted to the stack of papers before me as if sensing my hesitancy. He leaned over and murmured quietly, "Sophia." Money isn't the only factor here. You're in a tight spot, and this is your only option, so you're marrying me. Don't deceive yourself into believing that this is more than that. Because his remarks were so stinging, I tightened my jaw. "I understand why I'm here." His voice was a combination of curiosity and something more, something sinister, as he said, "And why is that?" I took a while to respond. Rather, I grabbed the pen and pressed it into position. Feeling the weight of the choice, I shook my hand as I reached the contract's first page and wrote my name. Every letter sealed my destiny in pen, acting as a death sentence. It was finished. The agreement was made. I was bound by more than just paper when I got married to Lucas Kane. There was no turning back once I was bound to him and his universe. "You made the right decision," Lucas replied in a cool but firm tone. "You'll see. You will eventually come to see that this was your only choice. For the first time in what seemed like an eternity, my eyes met his as I peered up at him. "Lucas, what's the catch?" He didn't recoil. didn't even blink. "You'll learn soon enough." I wanted to ask for answers, to say more, but something in his voice told me it would be useless. He was just going to fulfill his previous commitment to me. At that same moment, the office door opened, and a stranger entered. Davenport, Vanessa. As always, her attire was impeccable. Her grin was narrow and her stance was stiff, but what really drew my attention was the expression in her eyes. The way she observed me had a chilly, even predatory quality to it. Her gaze was like a searing burden on me. With a sweet voice like a silk thread laced with poison, she said, "Lucas." "I see that the deal has been finalized." With a sinking stomach, I sat up straight in my chair. "Vanessa," I began, attempting to speak steadily. "Why are you in this place?" Lucas's gaze was inscrutable as he glanced between us. Vanessa and I were just talking about the last few things. Vanessa, is that not correct? She didn't answer him right away. Rather, she turned to face me with the same cold grin. With a hint of danger in her voice, she continued, "Don't think for a second that this changes anything, Sophia." "You remain merely a pawn in a game that you do not comprehend." I tightened my hands under the table, but I was not going to be weak. "I am not a pawn." Vanessa's grin broadened, but it lacked warmth. Yes, but you are. Sophia, you've always been a pawn. And you shall remain forever. Lucas's voice interrupted me as I wanted to shout at her to go out. "Enough, Vanessa. We need to talk about business. Vanessa looked from me to him and back again. The tension in the room was so intense for a brief while that I felt like I was being choked. However, when she turned to go, she took a step back, her heels clicking on the shiny floor. With a tone of contempt, she answered, "I'll be in touch." And don't for a moment believe that this will be simple for you. Lucas is not the savior you believe him to be, as you will soon discover. Her words weighed me down like a dense cloud, and I stood still in my chair. What was she discussing? What was she trying to say? Lucas whispered, his voice piercing my mind, "Ignore her." She is just a diversion, nothing more. However, there was something about the way he spoke and the little flash of his eyes that caused me to doubt everything. Was Vanessa correct? Was I only a pawn? Had I committed the greatest error of my life? "Lucas," I whispered, standing there and shaking. "What's really happening here? What is the reality of this situation? He took a while to reply. Rather, he got up and strode toward the glass, his huge body looming over me. I briefly believed that he would not respond and would just ignore me like he often did when I asked too many questions. He turned to face me, however, and his eyes darkened for an unknown reason. "The truth?" he murmured. In fact, you've entered a far more perilous environment than you may have thought. And I've taken every precaution to keep you safe. However, it won't halt the impending storm. As his words took hold, a shiver went down my spine. Which storm? What did he really conceal? His phone rang on the desk before I could ask him another inquiry. His face hardened as he looked at it. He took the phone and left the room without saying another word, leaving me standing there by myself with my thoughts and the contract that had just become my life. But I noticed it as the door behind him snapped shut. I had not previously seen a single line on the contract. "In the event of a breach, all assets will be forfeited to Lucas Kane, and the signatory shall forfeit all rights to claim compensation." I became cold. I hadn't read my name from beginning to end. And everything changed with one phrase. End of Chapter 4
