Chapter 8: The Devil's Bargain

1593 Words
The night felt like it would never end. Aria sat on the edge of the huge black silk bed—way too fancy for someone like her—staring out the window at the dark gardens below. There were no stars in Nyxareth's sky, just thick darkness that seemed to eat up any light that tried to shine through. Just like this kingdom that crushed anyone's hope the moment they stepped foot inside. Tomorrow night. Kieran would tell her what he wanted tomorrow night. Those words kept spinning in her head, mixed with memories of those amber eyes that felt like they were still watching her from the shadows. Something had been different about the way Kieran looked at her today. Not like a predator sizing up its prey, but like... like a man looking at something precious he'd lost a long time ago. The thought made her stomach twist in ways she couldn't understand. A soft knock on the door made her jump. "Come in," she called out, hoping it was Lyra with dinner or some tea—anything to stop her thoughts from spiraling. But when the door opened, her breath caught in her throat. Kieran. He wasn't wearing his usual royal robes. Instead, he had on a black shirt that was half-unbuttoned, showing glimpses of his muscled chest, and dark pants that made his legs look impossibly long. His hair was messy, like he'd been running his fingers through it. He looked... human. And somehow, that made him way more dangerous. "I know you can't sleep," he said, his voice gentler than she remembered. "Neither can I." "Why can't you sleep?" The question slipped out before she could stop it. A small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth—one that actually looked real. "Because for the first time in centuries, I'm about to make a decision that could change everything." He stepped inside and closed the door carefully behind him, like he didn't want to scare her. That tiny consideration made something flutter in her chest. "You've decided what you want from me?" Aria whispered. Kieran didn't answer right away. He walked to the window and stared out at the dark gardens, his expression unreadable. In profile, his jawline looked sharp but somehow fragile too. "Your sister," he finally said, "is cursed with something born from ancient darkness." Aria shot up from the bed, moving closer without thinking. "A curse?" "Shadowblight isn't just some disease." Kieran turned to face her, his amber eyes blazing so intensely the air between them seemed to vibrate. "It's a curse created during the war between light and darkness thousands of years ago. It was designed to kill Light Bearers—guardians of light like you." "But Lila isn't—" "You have the same blood." Kieran stepped closer, close enough that she could feel the warmth coming from his body. "The Light Bearer power in you exists in her too, just weaker. Weak enough that Shadowblight sees her as a threat that needs to be eliminated." Aria's world tilted. Lila... Lila was cursed because of her? Because of some power she didn't even understand? "This is my fault," she whispered, tears starting to blur her vision. "Lila is dying because of me—" "No." Kieran's voice went hard, and suddenly his hand was on her cheek, forcing her to look at him. His fingers were warm and surprisingly gentle. "This isn't your fault, little light. You didn't choose to be born with that power." Something in his tone—a warmth she'd never heard before—made her tears fall harder. Kieran, the supposedly heartless Demon King, was comforting her with a tenderness that made her feel safe for the first time in days. "Healing her..." Kieran continued, his thumb brushing away her tears without him seeming to realize it. "It's possible. But the price..." He stopped, his hand still cupping her face. For a second, his mask of absolute control slipped, and Aria saw someone who was... uncertain? Maybe even afraid? "Tell me," Aria whispered, her hand moving up to cover his where it rested against her cheek. "I already promised I'd do anything." Kieran's eyes flickered like her touch had made him lose focus. Then he stepped back, his hand falling away, and that perfect mask snapped back into place. He started circling her with smooth, predatory movements. Every step was calculated, every gesture radiating power and danger. But weirdly, Aria didn't feel scared. What she felt was... anticipation? "To heal a curse that powerful," Kieran said, his voice returning to that dark velvet tone that made her shiver, "requires equally powerful magic. Magic that can only be used by someone who has an... intimate bond with the target." He stopped in front of her, amber eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her knees weak. "Marry me." The words hit Aria like a lightning bolt. The whole world went silent, like time had just stopped. "What?" "One full year as my queen." Kieran stepped closer, his voice dropping to a whisper that made the hair on her neck stand up. "One year of your life for your sister's." Aria felt like the floor had disappeared. Marriage? To the Demon King? "I... I don't understand—" "This isn't a love marriage, little dove," Kieran continued, and something in his tone sounded almost... gentle? Regretful? "It's a contract. Business. You'll be my queen to the world, but my bed stays cold." He said that last part with a weird inflection—like he was trying to convince himself as much as her. Something flashed across his amber eyes—disappointment? Longing?—gone so fast she almost thought she'd imagined it. "One year," Aria whispered, her mind struggling to process a proposal she'd never imagined in her worst nightmares. "And after that?" "After that, you're free." Kieran stepped back, creating distance that somehow left Aria feeling... empty? "You can go back to your village, to your normal life, like none of this ever happened." But something in how he said those words—too fast, too cold—made Aria think he was lying. Not to her, but to himself. "And Lila will be completely healed?" "Perfectly." Kieran's eyes never left her face. "No trace of the curse, no side effects. She'll live like a normal fifteen-year-old should." Aria felt everything spinning. One year of her life to save Lila—was that too much? But when she remembered her sister's pale face, those black veins spreading like poison, her breathing getting weaker every day... No. No price was too high for Lila's life. But marriage... to this man who made the entire world tremble in fear... "Why?" she whispered, looking straight into those amber eyes that seemed to see right through her. "Why marriage? Why not... something else?" For the first time, Kieran looked caught off guard. He stayed silent for what felt like forever, his jaw tightening like he was fighting with himself. "Because the magic needs an unbreakable bond," he finally said, but his voice sounded... incomplete. "Marriage is the strongest." "That doesn't answer my question." Kieran's eyes widened, surprised by how firm her voice was. Then, for just a moment, an almost real smile touched his lips. "You're smarter than I thought, little light." He turned and walked back to the window, his steps less steady than usual. From behind, Aria could see the tension in his shoulders, how his hands were clenched at his sides. "The real answer..." Kieran paused, his voice becoming so quiet she had to step closer to hear. "You might not like it." "Try me." Kieran looked back, meeting her eyes in the window's reflection. There was a vulnerability in that look that made something flutter in her chest. "Because after centuries alone," he whispered, "I want to know what it feels like... to have someone." The honesty in those words hit Aria harder than the marriage proposal itself. Standing there wasn't the terrifying Demon King—but a lonely man who'd spent forever in darkness and power with no one to share the burden. "One year," Aria whispered, not sure if she was asking or stating. "One year," Kieran repeated. "And after that, you're free to hate me for the rest of your life." There was bitterness in his tone that made her heart clench. Like he was already sure that when the year ended, she'd leave hating him. "I..." Aria swallowed, her heart beating so hard she was sure he could hear it. "I need time to think." Kieran nodded, his expression becoming unreadable again. "Of course. You have until dawn tomorrow." He started walking toward the door but stopped just before opening it. Without turning around, he spoke in a voice barely audible: "After tomorrow's dawn, I'm the only hope your sister has left." The door closed with the softest sound, leaving Aria alone with a decision that would change everything. She collapsed back onto the bed, hands shaking as she pressed them to her face. Marriage to Kieran Shadowmere. One year as the Demon King's queen. But when she closed her eyes, what she saw wasn't the face of some terrifying monster—but lonely amber eyes, a voice that trembled when he admitted he wanted companionship, and the warmth of hands that wiped her tears with a gentleness she never thought possible. Maybe, Aria thought as she stared out into Nyxareth's endless darkness, that year wouldn't be as terrible as she imagined.
