Someone once said, The only thing life gives equally to everyone is an unfair reality, and that couldn't be better said for anyone else than Maya. Why? Why did her own sister hate her so much? It wasn't her fault that she was born into the world. It wasn't her fault that her mother had cheated, she never gave out any permission to be given birth to so how and why did she have to face such levels of misery? The world was against her. Her fate was terrible. The angel that had created her had probably being drunk on duty. It was alarming that one person had to face all of this. The problems never seemed to end. It's like she solved one and got two for free. Minutes after Chris and Candice had departed the room and Maya was left with nothing but her thoughts, the door made way and a nurse came in. She smiled brightly on seeing Maya awake. “ Ms Edwin, it is such a great pleasure to see you with your eyes open after such a long week" the nurse said. Maya's eyes widened in shock. A whole week? She had been unconscious for a week. “ How do you feel, Miss?" the nurse asked. Maya wanted to speak, to explain the physical pain she felt, to ask the many questions that were racing in her head but the moment her lips parted, the gateway of tears made way and a flood came rushing out. The nurse became confused. " Miss, why are you crying? Did I say something wrong?” She asked innocently. Maya couldn't stop crying. No matter how hard she tried to control it, the rush of emotions wouldn't stop. Thinking of the fact that everything had been ruined, the life she had struggled to build for five years now had been destroyed. Where was she going to start from now? How would she pick up the pieces of her life? How was she going to move on from this? The more she thought about it, the more she cried. And the more she cried, the more her head felt like it was going to fall off. The confused nurse stared on in dismay. She tried consoling Maya bit it was of no use. How could she comfort her when she didn't even know why she was crying? Maya didn't realize that she had become hysterical. Her mind was drifting away to another world, in search of peace and her body was numbed from the pain. But she could hear the loud screams of a lady, every cry laced with agony and anguish. She couldn't tell if it was her, for she was too far away to understand what was happening. The nurse, at this point, realised that this situation was too much for her to handle. She hurriedly left the room in search of the doctor. Barely three minutes later, two doctors came rushing into the room, alongside the nurse. Maya could see their every move and hear everything they said. The screaming hadn't stopped, instead it was raised. “ The patient has become hysterical. We have to put her to sleep" one of the doctors said. " Did you tell her about her baby? “ The other asked the nurse who shook her head rapidly. " No! I simply asked her how she was feeling “ Maya heard the nurse explain. " Pass me the syringe “ She felt the sudden sting of a needle piercing her flesh and almost immediately, the screaming stopped. She felt her body tense. Whatever it was they injected in her system was working rapidly. Her insides felt like it was burning from the inside out. And then, it all went calm. She couldn't keep her eyes opened so she allowed them flutter shut, feeling her body go completely weak. Just before she lost complete consciousness, she heard one of the doctors say. “ You'll be fine. Everything will be fine!" No! She was wrong! Nothing was going to be fine! … When Maya woke up, some five hours later, she was weak. There was no physical pain anymore but every movement was a struggle. She managed to sit up on the bed, her eyes squinting from crying so much. She sniffed lightly, looking around the hospital room for the first time since she got here. It was a normal hospital room, white walls and filled with its usual nauseating scent. Maya heard the door open and a nurse walked in, different from the previous one. This one didn't smile at her or try to initiate any conversation. She simply went on with her duties. She took out the empty water bank and pulled out the needles making Maya hiss lightly from the pricking pain. The nurse exited just the way she came in as soon as she was done and Maya was left alone again. As she rested her head on the headrest, her eyes fell on something. A paper lying on the bedside table. Maya reached for it and picked it up. As she scanned through it, her pulse quickened and her hands began trembling. “ No!" Maya mumbled. " This can't be! “ She added, her eyes not leaving the paper. She read through it all over again, like that would make its contents change. Maya buried her head in her hands. What had she done? She might have destroyed her only hope of rising up after this massive fall with her own hands. What had she done? Turned out the papers Chris had given her and which she had signed, was more than just divorce papers. It was her handing over every thing she owned to him, including all the money in their joint savings account. It was joint but she was the only one who funded it. Not once had Chris deposited money in that account and now she had handed everything to him, just like that. How could she be so stupid to not read through the papers, no matter her grief? Chris and Candice were cunning people, how could she have forgotten that? Maya didn't cry this time even though her heart felt extremely heavy. She had cried so much that there was no extra tears to spare anymore. “ Oh what do I do now?" Maya mumbled to herself, facepalming herself repeatedly. She officially had nothing left at that point. She had no home and no money. This was that point where all she could hope for was a miracle to get her out of this. While Maya was lost in her thoughts, the door opened and the doctor who had spoken to her previously made her way towards her. A light tap was what it took to bring her back to reality. “ Ms Edwin, I trust you're doing okay now. How do you feel?” She asked. Maya managed to nod as a response. She didn't want to talk to anyone, she was afraid of losing herself again, afraid of plunging into another deep well of misery. The doctor somehow understood her predicament, but it was only the surface problems she could see. “ Ms Edwin, I am deeply sorry about the loss of your baby. God taketh and he giveth, I believe He will give back to you when he finds the time right. Do not let yourself be bothered about this, lest your health be affected” she continued. Maya didn't respond but it felt like a fresh wound had been opened up in her chest and it hurt so bad. The doctor didn't notice Maya's change and the pain that reflected on her face so she continued, “ That being said, I haven't seen your sister and her husband since yesterday” This statement was like a shot from a well-expertise sniper. It pierced through her chest and she couldn't help but ask, " My sister and her husband?” " Yes” the doctor responded. " We will need them to pay up the hospital bill so you can be fully discharged as you seem much better now. Do you have any means of reaching out to them?” She added. The tears Maya thought had been exhausted where they came from, was instantly regenerated. She tried to blink and bite her lips to hold it back but that was useless. The tears streamed down her face as her chest constricted in pain. “ Miss, did I say anything wrong?" The perplexed doctor inquired on Maya's sudden downpour. “ Can… can I please be alone for a moment? “ Maya said in between tears. The doctor nodded and left without another word. Maya's heart was heavy with pain. The least her husband and sister could have done was pay up the hospital bill. They put her in this position and now they had stolen all her money. How was she supposed to get out of here now? She had nothing. Absolutely nothing. Maya felt worthless at that point and as she sat there crying, a hazy idea kept flying through her mind. There was no use living!
