Chapter Two: The Chaos Variable
Location: Container Terminal 4
The dock was a kill zone.
The vampire, Countess Varya, was strong. She threw the massive wolf off her back, sending Jax skidding across the wet asphalt. She hissed, her eyes glowing red.
"A shifter?" Varya laughed. "I will make a rug out of you."
Jax recovered instantly, shaking the water from his fur. He snarled, circling her, distracting her.
That was Amara’s opening.
She dropped from the sky like a valkyrie, her boots slamming into the chest of the remaining mercenary. He went down with a crunch. Before he could rise, she spun, kicking the rifle out of his hands and driving the hilt of her dagger into his temple.
"Doctor!" Amara shouted at the terrified scientist cowering behind the car. "Get down!"
Dr. Thorne scrambled under the SUV.
Varya turned to face Amara. "The Santiago Guard," she sneered. "I heard the Triad was sending their lapdogs."
"I'm not a dog," Amara said, flipping her daggers into a reverse grip. "I'm the one who puts them down."
Varya lunged.
Amara didn't block; she flowed. She ducked under the vampire’s claws, slicing a deep gash across Varya’s thigh. Silver burned the vampire’s flesh. Varya shrieked, stumbling back.
Jax seized the moment. He lunged again, this time clamping his jaws around Varya’s arm—the one holding the briefcase.
CRUNCH.
The vampire screamed as her arm broke. The briefcase flew into the air.
Amara caught it.
"Jax! Clear out!" Amara ordered.
But Varya wasn't done. With her remaining hand, she pulled a pin on a grenade belt strapped to her waist.
"If I don't get it," Varya shrieked, "No one does!"
"Suicide vest!" Amara yelled.
Jax’s eyes went wide. He did the only thing a chaotic, protective Alpha could do. He shifted back to human form—naked, shivering, and covered in rain—and tackled Amara.
He slammed her behind the heavy steel wheel of a crane loader, covering her body with his own.
BOOM.
The explosion rocked the dock. Fireball engulfed the SUV and the vampire. Shrapnel pinged against the heavy machinery shielding them.
Amara lay on the wet concrete, crushed under Jax’s heavy weight. She could feel his heart hammering against her back. He smelled like wet dog, ozone, and adrenaline.
The ringing in her ears subsided.
"You're heavy," Amara groaned, shoving him.
Jax rolled off her, flopping onto his back in a puddle. He wiped soot from his face, grinning up at the rain.
"Did we get the briefcase?" he panted.
Amara held up the case. It was scorched, but intact. "We got it."
"And the Doctor?"
Amara looked around the corner. The SUV was a burning wreck. But Dr. Thorne... Dr. Thorne was gone. A maintenance manhole cover nearby was open.
"He ran," Amara cursed, standing up and brushing debris off her suit. "While you were playing hero, the asset escaped into the sewers."
Jax sat up, unbothered by his lack of clothing. "Hey, I saved your life. A 'thank you' would be nice."
"Put some pants on, Jax," Amara sighed, throwing him a spare tactical poncho from her pack. "We’re going into the tunnels."
