The freezing mountain air bit into Anaya’s face as she followed Kabir down the steep, slippery forest trail. The towering pine trees formed a dark canopy above them, blocking out what little moonlight was left. The thick Shimla fog was rolling in fast, turning the entire woods into a blurry, ghostly maze. Behind them, the distant wail of police sirens echoed from the Ridge, proving that Kabir’s warnings were entirely true.
"Keep up, journalist," Kabir muttered, his long strides forcing her into a fast jog. He kept his eyes scanning the trees, his hand never leaving the grip of his holstered gun.
"I have a name, you know. It’s Anaya," she breathed out, her lungs burning from the relentless pace. "And you still haven't told me where we are going. My car is parked near the Mall Road!"
"Your car is a trap," Kabir replied coldly without slowing down. "Rudra's men probably have a tracker on it by now. If you get into that vehicle, you’re dead before you hit the highway."
He led her deeper into a hidden ravine where a rugged, mud-splattered black SUV was parked under a camouflage net. It looked like a military vehicle, heavy and completely unmarked. Kabir ripped the netting away, threw open the passenger door, and looked at her. "Get in."
Anaya hesitated for a second, her independent nature resisting his blunt commands. But the memory of the silenced pistols and the roaring fire at her grandfather's shop flashed in her mind. She climbed inside, her body shivering uncontrollably from the adrenaline crash.
Kabir jumped into the driver's seat, started the powerful engine, and killed the headlights. He navigated the SUV through the dense trees in complete darkness, relying only on his knowledge of the terrain until they reached an old, unpaved back road leading out of the valley.
Once they were safely away from the immediate grid, he switched on the dim fog lights. The silence inside the car became heavy, broken only by the low rumble of the engine.
Anaya reached into her pocket and pulled out the heavy brass pocket watch. In the faint dashboard light, the runic symbols seemed to glow with a strange, golden hue. The hands were still frozen perfectly at 11:45.
"Why did my grandfather have this?" Anaya asked, her voice cracking with emotion as grief finally caught up to her. "He was just an old man who loved fixing clocks. Why would a mafia lord kill him over a pocket watch?"
Kabir glanced at the watch in her hands, his expression softening just a fraction. "Dinanath wasn't just a clockmaker, Anaya. He was a master cryptographer. Ten years ago, Rudra forced him to build an analog encryption system using mechanical watch gears. No computers, no digital footprints. Every transaction, every bribe, every secret bank account of Rudra's international empire is coded inside the gears of his custom watches."
Anaya gasped, staring at the antique piece. "And this watch?"
"This watch is the master key. Your grandfather called it 'The Watchmaker's Wheel'," Kabir explained, his voice grim. "It contains the final codes to unlock and destroy Rudra's entire network. Dinanath realized Rudra was going to eliminate him once the project was finished, so he hid the master watch and hired me to protect you."
Suddenly, a loud, metallic thud rattled the back of the SUV.
Anaya screamed as the rear windshield shattered into a thousand pieces. Through the rearview mirror, Kabir saw two black motorcycles roaring out of the fog behind them. The riders were dressed in full tactical gear, and the passenger on the lead bike was raising a submachine gun straight at their tires.
"Hold on!" Kabir roared, spinning the steering wheel violently as a spray of bullets tore through the mist.
