Eve hoped there would be more such evenings. Roger was noncommittal on the subject, and sensing no great enthusiasm on his part she asked him for permission to visit them in New Jersey, which involved a train ride of no great duration. He agreed as long as it was a weekday and she was back by dinnertime. She phoned Amy who was delighted to hear from her and arranged for a visit one Wednesday when Amy had only one class, a lecture which she considered quite dispensable. Eve arrived at the Madison train station at ten where Amy picked her up in her car, an old beat up looking VW Bug. Eve thought it strange to see Amy driving a car—it seemed so unslavelike. She herself had never learned to drive. But out here in the suburbs it was a necessity. They drove to a neighborhood somewhat more downs
