Chapter Eight A History Lecture One evening in September after Roger came home from work, he told Eve they would be going later to hear a lecture at the New School. She asked him what the lecture was about. “You know,” he said with a laugh, “I forgot to ask. The guy giving it is a friend of mine. He was one of my teachers at Princeton.” “What does he teach?” “Ancient history. He’s one of the foremost classical scholars in the country.” “Sounds very dull.” Roger laughed again. “It may well be, but we’re going anyway.” After dinner they took a cab down to the campus on West Twelfth Street, near Sixth Avenue.
