Chapter 8: Dinner Above the Clouds

"I can’t move my arms on my own! It’s locking me in!" Rea gasped, her voice tightening into a high, desperate pitch that completely shattered the quiet elegance of the immense wardrobe suite. She tried to wrench her shoulders back, but the silver cybernetic gown refused to budge. The liquid silk fabric felt cold against her skin, hardening seamlessly into an unyielding, rigid structure around her waist and spine. It forced her posture into a perfect, unnatural alignment. Beneath the glowing threads, hidden micro-filaments hummed softly as they burrowed deeper into the connection ports located along the back of her cybernetic neck. The sensation was terrifyingly efficient, completely freezing her free will from the shoulders down. Zeldin stood perfectly still behind her, his looming shadow dominating the smooth surface of the smart-mirror. His biological human eye remained cold and detached, while his left crimson optical lens cast a dull red glow across the back of her silver covered neck. He held a sleek, black administrative tablet in his metallic hand, his long fingers smoothly entering an encryption protocol that override her internal motor functions. "Relax your muscles, Rea," Zeldin said, his mechanical voice dropping to a low, smooth frequency that resonated through her bones. "The initial synchronization process is always the most restrictive. If you fight the systemic calibration, your neural core will experience a severe feedback shock." "You did this on purpose," Rea muttered, her jaw stiff as she forced the words out past her trembling lips. "You gave me this beautiful dress just to turn me into a literal puppet." Zeldin lowered the tablet, allowing it to lock magnetically onto the side of his dark utility belt. He stepped closer, his freezing leather-gloved hand resting heavily on her immobilized shoulder. "I gave you exactly what you asked for. You wanted the most expensive garment in the Upper Districts, and I provided it. But true luxury in Neo-Soma is never free. It requires an absolute integration with my central database." He tapped a quick command into his wrist terminal, and the agonizing tension in her limbs suddenly eased. Rea fell forward slightly, her breath coming in rapid, shallow gasps as her synthetic lungs worked to stabilize her oxygen intake. She looked down at the silver gown, which now rippled beautifully like liquid mercury, completely hiding the advanced security apparatus hidden inside its weave. It was a golden cage, and she had walked right into it for the sake of her own vanity. "Change your expression," Zeldin commanded quietly, his voice devoid of any empathy. "The private transport is waiting at the secondary launch pad. We have an elite gathering to attend at Orbit-7, and I expect you to look like a triumphant queen, not a terrified captive." Rea wiped a stray tear from her cheek, her manicured fingers brushing over her smooth, synthetic skin. She looked at her reflection, forced her lips into a practiced, shallow smile, and took a deep breath. She had no choice but to play along with his corporate script, at least until she could find a vulnerability in his iron security wall. Ten minutes later, they were soaring through the darkened sky of the megacity inside Zeldin's private, armored aerocar. The vehicle glided smoothly past the colossal neon advertisements that dominated the upper stratosphere of the Upper Districts. Below them, the Low Sector was a sprawling, chaotic sea of dim green and yellow lights, completely choked by thick layers of toxic smog. Up here, however, the air was perfectly clean, illuminated by the bright blue and silver lights of the corporate towers that touched the clouds. Their destination appeared through the mist like a massive, floating island of crystal and chrome. Orbit-7 was the most exclusive restaurant in the entire megacity, a massive structure suspended in mid-air by high-power anti-gravity engines. It catered exclusively to the high-ranking corporate executives, foreign tech ministers, and wealthy elite who controlled the financial lifeblood of Neo-Soma. As the aerocar touched down on the private, velvet-lined landing pad, a team of dressed attendants rushed forward to open the doors. Zeldin stepped out first, his towering, half-cybernetic frame drawing immediate attention from the nearby patrons. He turned and extended his heavy, black metal arm toward the vehicle interior. "Step out, Rea," Zeldin murmured, his crimson optical sensor tracking her every movement. "Let them see the asset I took from the lower trenches." Rea took his hand, the cold metal of his fingers sending a shiver through her arm as she stepped onto the polished exterior platform. The silver cybernetic dress caught the bright lights of the restaurant exterior, shimmering beautifully as she walked beside him. The high-society guests standing near the grand entrance immediately stopped talking, their eyes widening as they recognized the woman who had once been associated with Giska’s underground network. They walked into the main dining hall, a breathtaking room with a completely transparent glass floor that looked directly down onto the clouds below. Massive holographic marine creatures swam through the air above the tables, casting ethereal blue and green light across the wealthy diners. The atmosphere was thick with the scent of expensive synthetic wine and genuine, non-cloned organic food. Zeldin led her to the central VIP table, which was situated on an elevated platform that overlooked the entire room. He pulled out a sleek, obsidian chair for her, his grip on her shoulder tightening slightly as she sat down. "Remember your place," Zeldin whispered into her ear as he took his seat opposite her. "You are here to show the city that everything Giska once desired now belongs to me." Within moments, a pristine culinary android approached their table, its metallic face polished to a mirror finish. A digital menu projected from its chest, displaying a list of incredibly rare, real organic delicacies that cost thousands of Bio-Creds per serving. "Welcome back, Chief Executive Zeldin," the android intoned smoothly. "Are we prepared to select our courses for the evening?" "The lady will have the imported Atlantic salmon fillet, seasoned with natural sea salt, and a single glass of synthesized mineral water," Zeldin stated firmly, not even glancing at Rea as he placed the order. "No appetizers, and no sugar-based stimulants." Rea’s hand clenched around her linen napkin beneath the table. She looked at the digital menu, her eyes lingering on an exquisite, gold-leaf chocolate dome that she had always wanted to try. "Zeldin, I would prefer the roasted duck and the chocolate dessert. I don't want the salmon." Zeldin raised his human eye, his gaze boring into her with a terrifying weight that made her breath catch. "You will eat exactly what I have ordered for you, Rea. Your current synthetic digestive tract requires strict chemical balancing after the neural integration from earlier. I will not have your biological systems failing during a public display of my ownership." The android nodded mechanically, its processors recording the command. "Understood, Chief Executive. The selection has been locked into the kitchen mainframe." Rea looked away, her cheeks burning with absolute humiliation as she stared out through the transparent glass floor. She could see the faint reflections of the other corporate elites at the lower tables, all of them whispering and pointing toward her. They didn't see a human being; they saw a beautifully decorated prize, a physical symbol of Zeldin’s absolute victory over his rival. When the food arrived, Rea ate in complete, agonizing silence. Every bite of the perfectly cooked fish felt dry and tasteless in her mouth, ruined by the crushing weight of his control. Zeldin barely touched his own plate, his attention focused entirely on his wrist terminal as he monitored the fluctuating stock prices of Giska’s remaining logistics companies. "Your compliance tonight is acceptable," Zeldin remarked casually, wiping his lips with a dark silk cloth. "The media feeds are already reacting to our presence here. Giska’s shares have dropped another three percent in the last twenty minutes." "Is that all I am to you?" Rea asked quietly, her voice trembling with hidden resentment. "Just a financial weapon to break his company?" "You are whatever I need you to be," Zeldin replied coldly. "Right now, you are the ultimate proof of his bankruptcy. Tomorrow, you might be something else entirely." He stood up from the table, his massive frame casting a long shadow across the pristine white tablecloth. "Excuse me for a moment. The Minister of Energy is seated in the private lounge, and we have an agreement to finalize regarding the low-sector power grids. Stay here, do not move from this chair, and do not speak to anyone." "I understand," Rea whispered, keeping her eyes cast downward. Zeldin turned and walked away, his heavy boots making a distinct, rhythmic sound against the glass floor as his security guards fell into formation behind him. Rea finally let out a long, shuddering breath, her shoulders sagging as the intense pressure of his presence lifted. She leaned back in her chair, staring at the empty glass of water in front of her, feeling completely hollow inside. A few minutes passed in uneasy silence. The soft hum of the restaurant's jazz music did little to soothe her racing thoughts. Suddenly, a shadow fell over her table as a human waiter approached, carrying a silver tray with a fresh bottle of mineral water. He looked perfectly ordinary, dressed in the standard gold and black uniform of Orbit-7, but his movements were uncharacteristically tense. He leaned down smoothly to replace her glass, his body positioning blocking her from the line of sight of the remaining security cameras near the entrance. As he placed the fresh glass on the table, his head tilted slightly toward her. "Do not look around, Lady Rea," the waiter whispered, his voice incredibly low and hurried as his breath brushed against her ear. "Someone from your past is watching from below."
