Chapter 3 - Truth hurts

847 Words
Thea managed to hold herself together during their car ride back. Once she reached her hotel room, she quietly shut the door and slumped down. A moment later River knocked on her door. "Hey, are you okay? I waved at you downstairs but you ignored me." River said through the door. "Is it true? The reason he left so suddenly, was because of me? And why didn’t anyone tell me you all hate humans?" She said ignoring River’s question. "It's complicated." River said. "Just tell me the truth. I thought we were friends." Thea tested. "Yes, it’s true that he eliminated any threats to his mate. No, I don't hate humans." "Wow, Viktor was right." Thea scoffed. After a few minutes, River had finally left her alone. Thea sat on her bed, contemplating her life decisions. She'd learnt a lot about wolves, but there was still one thing that always unsettled her and it was the amount of killings they found to be normal. Was it normal? Viktor didn't seem to think so. “Please leave me alone, River.” Thea called out to the knock at her door. Another knock. Louder this time. She rolled her eyes. River was persistent, she’d give her that. “I'm not in the mood, River…” she muttered, yanking the door open, Only to find Reign standing there. “Seriously?” he snapped. Her brows furrowed, did he really think he had any right to react to her like that. “Seriously.” She replied but louder as she attempted to slam the door on his face but he held it open with ease. She grunted at her attempt to shut it. His nostrils flared as he took in another male’s scent. She was covered in it. "Why's Viktor's scent all over you?" He was furious but he tried his best to hold it together. She glanced down, remembering she was still wearing Viktor's clothes. “You have no right to dump me and then tell me who I can’t smell like.” She hissed. His voice dropped into a growl. “I’m going to kill him.” “No, you are not.” Her tone sharpened, warning clear. “You’re my mate, Thea!” he shouted, voice breaking at the edges. “And you’re mine but I’m not allowed to go crazy over the s**t you’ve done, so you can get over me wearing Viktor’s clothes.” She said loudly, pointing a finger in his face. He pushed her finger away from his face. “Why do you have his clothes on?” He asked, his tone cold. She sighed, “Because I fell in water, and because he’s kind, he gave me his to wear so I didn’t freeze to death.” She said, matter of fact. "I can't deal with his scent all over you!" He yelled. "And I can't deal with you sleeping with Diandra the night after cutting things off with me." She yelled back, off topic, but she was still mad about it, the day away from him had only allowed more time to fester on it. His jaw tightened. “Take it off.” He growled. “Reign,” she warned, tone sharp. He exhaled slowly, trying to settle himself. “The glacier was meant to be our thing, and now you come back smelling of that filthy human.” He finished the word before he realised it. “I didn’t mean it, Thea.” He quickly said. “You did,” she replied, voice tight. His jaw twitched. “I didn’t.” “Maybe I should start saying things I don’t mean, Viktor smells nice, his eyes are dreamy, and at one point I thought about kissing him.” She wanted to hurt him the same way he just hurt her, even if it seemed childish of her to do so. Reign towered over her, his pulse slowing, his breath matching, like a predator about to strike. “Don’t ever say that… Mate.” He said, tone low, cold. “What,” she snapped. “So, you can hurt me, and I have to take it? Whatever, Reign. Please leave. I’m done talking to you.” She said pointing to the exit. “Thea.” He said her name, is a way that only he could. “Reign.” She said crossing her arms. “I’m sorry, I didn’t come here to fight.” “And I don’t want to.” She replied. “I’ll see you tonight.” He said as he turned to leave. The scent of that asshole was too much for him. “Maybe.” She said, as he looked back at her. Standing there in Viktor’s clothes, it hurt. Like the invisible sword she had left buried in his chest, twisting with every breath he took. She slammed her door shut, and he stood there for a moment. River had heard it all, she stood still unsure what to say for comfort. "Make sure she's okay in a moment." He said through pained words and then left.
