I was sorting through printed photos on the cabin floor when someone knocked.
Not Skye’s playful tap tap.
Not Mom’s soft, polite three knocks.
This was solid. Sharp. No hesitation.
I opened the door.
Mara stood on the porch, arms crossed, face unreadable.
“We need to talk.”
Not a question.
I stepped aside. “Okay.”
She walked in slowly, her gaze sweeping over the cabin. The photos cover every surface. The empty coffee cups. The blanket piled on the couch where I’d clearly been sleeping instead of in my bed.
“You look terrible." She said flatly.
“Wow. Thank you. Exactly what I needed today.”
“I’m not here to be nice.”
