The cold steel of the Beretta lingered under my chin for what felt like an eternity.
Don Salvatore’s eyes were obsidian pools, stripping away the layers of dirt and rain, searching for the truth beneath my terrified facade. I kept my breathing shallow, letting a single, pathetic tear slide down my cheek and splash against the hand holding the gun.
"Please," I whispered, a desperate, broken sound. "I'm just... I'm just Lina."
For a fraction of a second, the corner of Don’s mouth twitched. He slowly lowered the weapon, the metal slipping away from my skin, leaving behind a phantom chill. He slid the gun back into his coat with practiced ease.
"Bring her," he ordered, his voice echoing with absolute finality.
He didn't look back as he turned and walked toward the mouth of the alley, his dark overcoat billowing slightly in the wet wind.
Before I could react, large hands clamped onto my arms. The two massive bodyguards hauled me to my feet with effortless strength. I let out a yelp of surprise, my legs deliberately wobbling as if they couldn't support my weight. They didn't drag me roughly, but the grip was unyielding—a clear message that resistance was futile.
At the end of the alley idled a sleek, armored black SUV, its engine purring like a dormant beast. One of the guards opened the rear door and practically tossed me inside.
I scrambled across the luxurious leather seats, shrinking into the farthest corner. A second later, the door on the opposite side opened, and Don slid in. The doors closed, sealing us in a heavy, soundproof bubble that smelled of rich leather and his intoxicating bergamot cologne.
The vehicle smoothly accelerated into the rainy night.
I kept my knees pulled to my chest, stealing terrified glances at the man beside me. Don sat in perfect stillness, staring out the tinted window at the blurred city lights. He didn't speak. He didn't even acknowledge my presence.
The silence was a psychological weapon, designed to break down nerves. My BAU training kicked in—he is establishing dominance, forcing you into a state of hyper-awareness and dependency. I played the part flawlessly, trembling visibly, wrapping my thin, wet coat tighter around myself.
"You're ruining the upholstery," he remarked suddenly, his voice low, not bothering to turn his head.
"I-I'm sorry," I stammered, frantically trying to brush the water and grime off the pristine seat, my hands shaking. "I didn't mean to... I can get out..."
"Sit still."
The command was soft, but it carried the weight of a physical blow. I froze instantly, my hands dropping to my lap, my head bowed in total submission.
After thirty tense minutes, the SUV slowed, turning off the main road and approaching a set of massive wrought-iron gates. Cameras tracked our movement, and heavily armed men patrolled the perimeter. The gates swung open, revealing a winding driveway lined with ancient oak trees, leading up to a sprawling, fortress-like mansion.
The Salvatore Estate. The nerve center of the East Coast Mafia.
I'm in, I thought, a surge of adrenaline spiking through my veins.
The SUV came to a halt in front of a grand stone portico. The door was opened by a guard, and Don stepped out into the night. I hesitated for a moment, playing the frightened stray, before scrambling out after him.
The interior of the mansion was a dizzying display of wealth and power. Marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and priceless art adorned the vast foyer. But the opulence was overshadowed by the sheer number of armed men lingering in the corridors.
"Don!"
A sharp, feminine voice cut through the heavy atmosphere.
Clicking heels echoed on the marble as a woman descended the grand sweeping staircase. She was stunning, with fiery dark hair, crimson lips, and a gaze sharper than the switchblade I'd faced in the alley. She wore a silk emerald dress that clung to her curves, radiating danger and authority.
Carmen Salvatore. Don's adopted sister and the family's ruthless underboss.
Her dark eyes landed on me, and her beautiful face twisted into a sneer of pure disgust. "What is this, Don? Why did you bring a stray rat into the house?"
I shrank back, instinctively stepping behind Don’s broad shoulder, using him as a shield. It was a calculated move—playing into his protective ego.
Don didn't look at Carmen. He casually unbuttoned his overcoat, handing it to a waiting servant. "She is my guest, Carmen. Watch your tone."
Carmen stopped at the bottom of the stairs, her hands on her hips, her eyes flashing with defiance. "A guest? She smells like the gutter. You know we can't have loose ends wandering around the estate. Whatever game you're playing..."
"It's not a game," Don interrupted, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. He slowly turned his head to look at his sister. The air in the room seemed to freeze. "I found her. She is mine to do with as I please. Do you have a problem with my decisions, Carmen?"
The tension between them was palpable, crackling like electricity. Carmen's jaw tightened. For a moment, it looked like she might challenge him, but the absolute, chilling authority in Don's eyes forced her to back down.
"No, Don," she said through gritted teeth. "Your house, your rules."
Don turned his attention back to me. His dark eyes swept over my shivering, miserable form. "Take her upstairs," he ordered a nearby maid. "Clean her up. Give her proper clothes. And feed her."
"Yes, Mr. Salvatore," the maid bowed quickly.
"T-thank you," I whispered, forcing a tear to spill over my lashes, looking up at him with what I hoped looked like pure, worshipful gratitude. "Thank you, sir. You saved my life."
Don didn't smile. He merely stared at me for a long moment before turning away, walking toward the grand double doors of what looked like a study. "Don't make me regret it, little bird," he called back over his shoulder.
The maid gently touched my arm, leading me toward the stairs.
As I walked up, I felt a heavy gaze burning into my back. I risked a timid glance over my shoulder. Carmen was still standing at the bottom of the stairs, glaring up at me. There was no pity in her eyes, only a lethal promise.
I'm watching you, rat, her expression said.
I quickly looked away, bowing my head and following the maid down a long, plushly carpeted hallway.
I was escorted into a guest suite that was larger than my entire apartment back in D.C. The maid started a hot bath in the adjoining marble en-suite, laid out a silk nightgown, and quietly left me alone.
I stood in the center of the lavish bathroom, listening to the rushing water.
Slowly, the trembling stopped. My posture straightened. The terrified, submissive Lina vanished, replaced by the cold, calculating precision of Agent Erin.
I looked into the gilded mirror above the sink. My hair was matted, my face smudged with dirt, but my eyes were sharp and clear.
I was inside the golden cage. Don Salvatore had claimed me, his protective instincts triggered exactly as the profile predicted. But Carmen was a wildcard—suspicious, jealous, and deadly.
One wrong move, one slip of the mask, and this cage would become my tomb.
I reached up and began to unbutton my ruined, wet dress. A dark, dangerous thrill curled in my stomach.
Let the games begin, Don.
