Chapter 1

This is so awkward...Cassie Blackwell thought to herself, while she grinned bashfully at the blonde on black blazer and black flannel trousers. The lady stared intently at Cassie and it was as if the blonde was looking right into her soul. Cassie nibbled on her lower lips as her cheeks turned pink with embarrassment. “Err…” She mumbled uncomfortably, trying to focus on the beauty of the mansion she would soon be working in. Its sheer beauty almost made her puke and it was not from disgust; rather her stomach couldn’t bear its extravagance. The decor of the mansion could not be over emphasized. The sofa Cassie was asked to sit on didn’t help in making her interview less boring. It made her so comfortable that she felt like sleeping. Just like now… “Why are you interested in being a housemaid?” The blonde lady interrupted her thoughts in a bored tone. She pinched herself harshly to remind herself of why she was here in the first place. “Well, I hate my last job and this one pays better.” Cassie could swear that she saw a look of horror on the blonde’s face before it disappeared just as quickly as it came. She wasn’t expecting the blonde to nod her head as though she was impressed with her ridiculous answers. “Fair enough. But not the answer I was looking for Miss Blackwell.” The blonde replied sharply. Even though Cassie knew the blonde was frustrated with her replies, she was rather impressed that nothing gave her frustrations away. “The whole point of working here is about honesty right? This is me being honest. I am not some girl coming in here feigning to be interested in the job, giving crazy reasons of why I am interested in this job only to impress you. I’m just being myself,” There was no other reason Cassie could think of as to why she was interested in being a house maid. She was really desperate here and desperate times called for desperate measures. The blonde shook her head as there was a hint of smile on her face. “A lot of ladies come in here claiming to want this job for passion only but in fact they are gold diggers and seem to have an ulterior motive towards the boss…” The blonde leaned closer with a dark look on her face. “…surely, you don’t have any ulterior motive towards our boss or do you?” Cassie chuckled nervously “No. I haven’t seen the boss before so, I don’t think I have any ulterior motive towards her.” “I never said it was a She,” The blonde replied absentmindedly while pulling out an apple tablet and tapping speedily on it. She snapped her head up. “Anyway, I like you. You are honest, and quiet when needed be. I will get back to you shortly.” She said, standing up with her right hand outstretched for a handshake. Cassie forcefully shifted her attention away from the tablet even though it was beautiful, more expensive than apartment with all the properties in it. She smirked shook the blonde’s hand firmly. “My name is Ramon Kelly, you can call me Kelly.” The blonde turned, removing her manicured hands from Cassie’s sweaty ones. “Why didn’t you tell me your name initially?” Cassie was puzzled at her weird behavior. “Only those I like, I tell my name. Shall we?” Kelly gestured towards the door. She is so cool…Cassie concluded as she walked out of the mansion. During the interview she noticed that the blon…Kelly was stiff but also was a realistic person who sees the world for what it actually is. Cassie couldn’t afford the expensive fare that she took in coming to the mansion again. Already calculating her route, she realized that getting to the bus station takes about forty-five minutes walk from the mansion. She nodded her head to no one in particular as she brought out her earpiece, connected it to her phone and tapped on the most depressing song saved on her playlist. As the song filled her ears, Cassie started to walk. She ignored the glares everyone gave her because she seemed to be the only one on foot while everyone else boarded a taxi or was smoothly entering a luxurious looking car. Without care, tears dropped from her eyes but she wiped it immediately. The unwanted glares people gave her was enough and she didn’t want to attract more attention to herself by bawling her eyes out on the street. Get a grip of yourself, Cassie and pray that you get this job because if you don’t, It’s back to stripping again. Cassie said, knowing full well that she wouldn’t go back to her former job of stripping. That life was not what she wanted for herself. Although being a housemaid wasn’t any better, she could afford some luxury with the pay she would get from being one in the Black mansion. Walking for about forty minutes, Cassie could see the bus station across the street. It was evening and the bus station was rather overcrowded. A lot of people who worked in offices and house like the Black mansion but couldn’t afford a house in the Black estate have been dismissed. They were all heading home from various directions. Most of them were ashamed to be seen walking and so had entered taxis but some who weren’t ashamed of walking just like Cassie, rather walk down to the bus station. Cassie frowned at the long queue of people waiting for the next bus to arrive. It was no use dragging for a space with people who wanted to get home to their families quickly. There was no on waiting for her at home. She took her seat beside an old man and rubbed her hands together as the evening had become suddenly chilly. Her phone beeped, distracting her from the music. She peered at her phone curiously to check the message. Weirdly; it was from the Black Mansion.
