I leaned back, breathing a sigh of relief as the truck passed through the gates, speeding down the road. It finally pulled to a halt and Petunia nudged me. “It’s time, get off and run as fast as you can.” I nodded and we jumped out together, racing toward the gas station. “Hey! Aren’t those the prisoners?!” My heart leapt and I increased my pace, running toward the gas station. Several footsteps filled my ears as the chase ensued, the guards were catching up — fast. I yelped as Petunia pushed me ahead. “No!” I cried when one of the guards tackled her to the ground. “Run, Emmaline, run!” She yelled. “Don’t look back, run!” Aiden’s words echoed in my mind. ‘Don’t be selfless, Emmaline. If you have to throw someone under the bus, push them.’ But Petunia wasn’t just someone.
