ELLIE The bed is cold on his side when I wake. I've stopped being surprised by that. I lie there a while with my arm across the empty half of it, listening to the compound come up. Somebody is moving crates in the yard below. A dog is going off somewhere past the wall, and further out, at the edge of what I can hear, the training field. My phone is on the nightstand. My mother's manual is on the table by the window. I look at both of those things, and I don't get up for either. Five days since I swore I'd be the kind of Luna this pack deserved. Since then, I've only helped one way. But I don't know what a Luna is supposed to do. Nobody has ever told me. My mother died too soon.
