CHAPTER EIGHT: BEFORE THE BETRAYAL

620 Words
Long before the luxury, the heartbreak, and the cold nights… There was a small house at the edge of a quiet community. The walls were old. The roof leaked when it rained. But inside… There was warmth. There was love. And there was Zara. “Zara! Slow down, you’ll fall!” her mother called out, laughing as a younger Zara ran across the dusty compound with a book clutched tightly to her chest. “I won’t fall, Mama!” she replied, her voice bright and full of life. She was always running. Always smiling. Always dreaming. At just ten years old, Zara was already different from the other children. While they played outside for hours, she would sit under the old mango tree with a book in her hands, completely lost in another world. “Come and play!” the other kids would call. “In a minute!” she’d shout back. But that minute rarely came. Because Zara loved learning. She loved understanding. She loved the feeling of knowing something new. --- “First position again?” her father asked one evening, adjusting his glasses as he looked at her report card. Zara nodded proudly. “Yes, Papa!” Her father’s face broke into a wide smile. “That’s my girl,” he said, pulling her into a hug. “You’ll go far, Zara. Very far.” Her mother smiled from the corner of the room. “She will,” she said softly. “Our daughter is special.” Zara beamed. Those words meant everything to her. --- School became her safe place. Her escape. Her future. Teachers admired her. Students respected her. Even the headmaster once said: “Zara Cole is the kind of student every school prays for.” But behind all the praise… There was struggle. Fees were not always easy to pay. Sometimes, Zara would notice her parents whispering late at night. Worried. Tired. Trying their best. And every time she saw that… She studied harder. “I’ll make it worth it,” she promised herself. “I won’t let their sacrifices be in vain.” --- By the time she reached her final year in high school, Zara had become the pride of the entire community. Neighbors spoke of her with admiration. “You see that girl? She’ll become something great.” “Maybe a doctor… or a lawyer.” “She’ll change her family’s story.” Zara heard it all. But she didn’t let it get to her. She just kept working. Kept dreaming. Kept believing. --- And then… He appeared. Daniel Hayes. The complete opposite of everything she stood for. Rich. Careless. Arrogant. The kind of boy who walked into school like he owned it. Because in many ways… He did. His family funded half the school’s projects. Teachers treated him differently. Students admired him. Girls chased him. But Daniel? He didn’t care about any of it. Especially not school. “Why are you always reading?” he asked one afternoon, dropping into the seat beside Zara without invitation. Zara didn’t even look up. “Because I want to pass,” she replied simply. Daniel chuckled. “You’re funny.” Zara sighed, finally glancing at him. “I’m serious.” Daniel leaned back, studying her. “You’re different,” he said. Zara frowned slightly. “And you’re distracting,” she replied, turning back to her book. For a moment, Daniel just stared at her. Then— He smiled. --- That was how it started. Simple. Unexpected. Innocent. But sometimes… The smallest beginnings lead to the biggest mistakes. And Zara had no idea— That the boy who sat beside her that day… Would one day become the reason her world fell apart.
