CHAPTER THREE: NOWHERE TO GO

785 Words
The night air was cold. Too cold. Zara wrapped her arms tightly around herself as she stepped out of the apartment building, the door slamming shut behind her like a final goodbye. She didn’t turn back. She couldn’t. If she did… she might break completely. Her vision blurred as tears streamed silently down her cheeks, but she kept walking, one step at a time, even though her legs felt like they could give out at any moment. This was it. Three years of her life… gone. Just like that. A bitter laugh escaped her lips, empty and broken. “So this is how it ends…” she whispered. No home. No love. No one. Her hand slowly moved to her stomach, resting there protectively. Not completely alone. The thought should have comforted her. Instead, it made everything more real. More terrifying. “What am I going to do…?” she murmured. Her phone buzzed suddenly in her hand, making her flinch. Daniel. His name flashed across the screen. For a second… just a second… hope flickered in her chest. Maybe he realized. Maybe he felt guilty. Maybe— The call ended. A message came in. Zara hesitated before opening it, her fingers trembling slightly. Her heart dropped as she read the words. *Don’t come back. Vanessa doesn’t like you around.* Silence. Then another message. *I’ll send someone to get your things.* Zara stared at the screen, her chest tightening painfully. That was it. No apology. No explanation. Just… dismissal. Like she had never mattered. Like she was nothing. A tear slid down her cheek as her grip on the phone loosened. “Okay…” she whispered softly. Her voice didn’t shake this time. It was quiet. Empty. “I get it now.” Slowly, she lifted her head, staring out at the unfamiliar street ahead of her. The city lights glowed brightly, but for the first time… they felt cold. Distant. Unforgiving. “I won’t come back,” she said, more to herself than anyone else. Her fingers curled slightly against her stomach again. “And I won’t beg.” The words came out stronger this time. Stronger than she felt. But she held onto them anyway. Because it was all she had left. Zara walked for what felt like hours, her mind blank, her body moving on pure instinct. She didn’t know where she was going. She just knew she couldn’t stay. Not here. Not anywhere that reminded her of him. Eventually, she stopped in front of a small bus station. The sign flickered weakly above the entrance. Almost like it was about to give up too. Zara stared at it for a long moment. Then, slowly, she reached into her bag, pulling out her wallet. She counted the money inside. It wasn’t much. But it was enough. Enough to leave. Enough to start… something. Her heart pounded again, but this time, it wasn’t from fear. It was from decision. “This place has nothing for me anymore,” she whispered. Taking a deep breath, Zara walked toward the ticket counter. “Where to?” the attendant asked without looking up. Zara hesitated. Just for a moment. Then she said the first place that came to mind. “Anywhere far from here.” The attendant finally looked up, raising an eyebrow. Zara didn’t flinch. “I mean it,” she added quietly. “The farthest you have.” A pause. Then the sound of typing. “There’s a night bus leaving in twenty minutes,” he said. “Last stop.” Zara nodded. “I’ll take it.” As she handed over the money, her fingers trembled slightly. Not from doubt. But from the weight of what she was about to do. This wasn’t just a trip. This was a goodbye. A final one. Ticket in hand, Zara walked toward the waiting area and sat down, her heart beating heavily in her chest. She glanced around at the strangers passing by. None of them knew her. None of them cared. And maybe… that was a good thing. For the first time since everything fell apart, Zara allowed herself to close her eyes. Just for a second. “I don’t know what’s waiting for me,” she whispered softly, her hand resting on her stomach once more. “But I know one thing…” Her eyes slowly opened. And this time, there was something new in them. Not hope. Not yet. But something close. “I’m not coming back as the same person.” The bus engine roared to life in the distance. Zara stood up. And without looking back… She walked toward a future she couldn’t see— But was finally ready to face.
