The penthouse was silent.
Too silent.
Daniel stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, a glass of whiskey in his hand as he stared out at the glowing city below.
Everything looked perfect.
The view.
The life.
The success.
So why did it feel… empty?
He took a slow sip, his jaw tightening slightly.
“Still thinking about her?”
The voice came from behind him—smooth, amused.
Daniel didn’t turn.
“There’s nothing to think about,” he replied coldly.
Soft footsteps followed.
Then arms wrapped around him from behind.
Vanessa.
She leaned into his back, her voice low and sweet.
“Good,” she murmured. “Because she’s not worth it.”
Daniel said nothing.
But his grip on the glass tightened just a little.
Vanessa noticed.
She always noticed.
A small smile curved her lips—but it didn’t reach her eyes.
“Come on,” she said lightly, moving around to face him. “Why ruin the mood? We should be celebrating.”
“Celebrating what?” Daniel asked flatly.
“Our engagement,” she said, tilting her head slightly. “Or have you forgotten already?”
Daniel finally looked at her.
She was stunning.
Elegant.
Perfect.
Everything a man like him was supposed to have.
So why…
He pushed the thought away.
“I didn’t forget,” he said.
“Good,” Vanessa smiled, reaching up to adjust his collar. “Because I have plans for us.”
Daniel raised a brow.
“Oh?”
“Mhm,” she hummed, stepping back slightly. “There’s this investment opportunity I’ve been looking into. It’s exclusive. High return.”
Daniel sighed quietly.
“Another one?”
Vanessa’s smile faltered for just a second—but she quickly recovered.
“This one is different,” she said softly. “Trust me.”
There it was.
Trust.
Funny how easily the word came from her lips.
Daniel hesitated.
Then nodded.
“Fine. Send me the details.”
Vanessa’s smile widened instantly.
“I knew you’d say yes.”
She leaned forward and kissed his cheek lightly.
But as she turned away…
Her expression changed.
Completely.
The warmth disappeared.
Replaced by something colder.
Sharper.
---
Later that night…
Vanessa stood alone on the balcony, her phone pressed to her ear.
Her voice was no longer soft.
No longer sweet.
“He agreed,” she said quietly.
A pause.
Then a low chuckle came from the other end.
“Of course he did,” a man’s voice replied. “Men like him are predictable.”
Vanessa smirked.
“He’s easier than I thought,” she admitted. “Still emotionally distracted.”
“By the ex?” the voice asked.
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“Please. That girl is out of the picture.”
“Don’t underestimate her,” the man warned. “Sometimes the ones you throw away come back stronger.”
Vanessa’s smile faded slightly.
For a moment.
Then she scoffed.
“She’s nothing,” she said firmly. “And even if she comes back… it won’t matter.”
“Good,” the voice replied. “Because we’re close.”
Vanessa’s grip on the phone tightened slightly.
“How much have we moved so far?” she asked.
“Enough to make him bleed,” the man said calmly. “Not enough for him to notice yet.”
Vanessa’s eyes sparkled with satisfaction.
“Perfect.”
“And the next step?” she asked.
A pause.
Then—
“We take more.”
Vanessa smiled.
Slow.
Dangerous.
“I like that plan.”

Back inside…
Daniel sat alone, the untouched whiskey glass still in his hand.
His eyes drifted to his phone on the table.
For no reason…
He picked it up.
Scrolled.
Stopped.
Zara’s contact.
Still there.
Still saved.
His thumb hovered over it.
For a second.
Two.
Then—
He locked the phone and tossed it aside.
Annoyed.
“Why am I even thinking about this?” he muttered.
She was gone.
Out of his life.
Out of his world.
Exactly where she belonged.
So why did it feel like something was missing?
Daniel frowned, pushing the thought away as he stood up.
He didn’t notice the quiet storm forming around him.
Didn’t see the trap slowly closing.
Didn’t realize that the woman beside him…
Was the beginning of his downfall.
And somewhere far away…
The one he discarded was fighting to survive.
Unaware that fate was already preparing her return—
Stronger.
Wiser.
And far beyond his reach.
