Even after my 18th birthday passed, the whispers never stopped. In the eyes of the pack, I was wolfless , useless. “She’s cursed,” they’d say. “Her father’s spirit scared away her wolf,” others would add. I’d hear them on the streets, at the training grounds, and in class. I tried not to let it get to me. But how do you ignore a world that’s already judged you?
And it wasn’t just strangers. My classmates, people I’d grown up with they changed too. When everyone in our age group turned 18, the celebrations were grand. There were parties, initiations, power blessings… everyone showing off their wolves with pride.
But me? Nothing.
No one asked about my wolf because they already assumed the answer. Even my so called best friend, Sherry’s 18th birthday party tonight at the community lodge.
Despite all the whispers, the judgmental glances, and the cruel gossip, I still went to Shelly’s birthday party.
even though I had a feeling I shouldn’t. The moment I walked in, the whispers began low, sharp, poisonous.
“There she is… the girl with no wolf.”
“She should’ve stayed home.”
“Her own mate wouldn’t recognize her.”
My heart ached, but I stood tall. I didn’t need their validation. I had Kayla that’s was I told myself.
Sherry was laughing, surrounded by girls from the pack. When I approached to wish her well, she barely looked at me and when she did, it was with mocking eyes. She nudged another girl beside her, and they both laughed while casting glances my way
I don’t even know why I showed up maybe part of me still held on to who we used to be. Best friends. Sisters, even. Before everything turned cold.
The park was full that night. All eyes were on me, as always. But not for the right reasons. They whispered behind champagne glasses and fake smiles, calling me all kinds of names , Saying the Alpha only gave me a scholarship out of guilt for my father’s death, not because I earned it.
I was trying to breathe through it, pretending not to hear, when it happened.
Shelly walked up to me, all glammed up with fake confidence in her eyes. She said nothing just smirked, then pushed me.
Hard.
I lost my balance and hit the ground in front of everyone. A loud gasp rippled through the crowd. My knees burned, my pride cracked. The laughter stung worse than the fall.
Tears brimmed in my eyes. I was ready to break, to disappear completely until I felt something warm around me.
A coat.
A warm coat was gently placed over my shoulders, shielding me from the cruel eyes. And then, a calm voice said, “Get up.”
The scent hit me first.
My heart froze.
I knew that scent.
I slowly looked up and gasped.
It was him.
The Alpha Prince.
The same man I had barged in on, the one who humiliated me that night I came to thank the Alpha.
He was standing there. Helping me.
My lips parted in shock.
He leaned in slightly, his voice low but calm. “Are you alright?”
I couldn’t even answer. My chest tightened with confusion, disbelief… and something else I couldn’t name.
Then the whispers began again.
“What’s the Alpha Prince doing with her?”
“The wolfless girl? The cursed one?”
“she has charmed him”
Shelly stormed toward us, her heels clacking hard against the marble floor. “Come on, Prince,” she said with a forced laugh, placing a hand on his chest. “This isn’t the type of company you should be keeping.”
He turned to her, his gaze steady, and calmly said something I couldn’t quite hear but whatever it was, it made Shelly freeze and clench her jaw in fury.
He then turned back to me and without asking gently took my hand.
I blinked.
He held it like I mattered. Like I wasn’t an embarrassment.
And just like that, we walked out of the party.
