A Score to Settle

(Julia’s POV) After I saw the strange credit alert—$50,000 from a name that hit me like a punch—I didn’t confront Raymond. Not right away. For all I knew, he was just a fling. A body to keep me warm and distracted. Sure, I liked his voice. I liked the way he showed up each time I was having one of my strange episodes. But truthfully? He was still a stranger. One with secrets. Just like me. So, I did what I always do when something doesn’t feel right. I smiled. And pretended not to know a thing. Later that morning The smell of burnt coffee pulled me out of sleep. Sunlight spilled through the blinds in broken lines. I sat up slowly. My head was pounding, and my heart was still restless from the night before. Raymond was already in the kitchen—shirtless, humming something off-key.
