"Go," I whispered to Kane, my heart breaking as I watched blood drip from his nose. "Don't make it worse." My fingers clutched his shirt, not wanting to let go, but knowing I had to.
The moment he disappeared with Elder Miriam, my strength crumbled. I collapsed onto the small cot in my cell, tears streaming down my face. My hands instinctively went to my stomach, protecting the tiny life growing inside me.
"I'm so sorry, little one," I whispered to my baby. "I'm so sorry you got caught up in all this."
