Second encounter

"Two jolly friends," they heard Lance's voice behind them, and Emily turned to see him approaching with a warm smile. The three of them had been close friends since childhood, and their families were among the wealthiest in the community. However, Emily’s family was still the wealthiest and most influential of the three. Cassie didn't wait for Lance to reach them, instead, she walked towards him, excitement radiating from her face. "Lance, you won't believe what Emily just told me!" she said, barely containing her enthusiasm. Lance raised an eyebrow, intrigued, "What's got you so excited, Cassie?" he asked, his eyes flicking to Emily, who was watching the exchange with a mix of amusement and embarrassment. "Emily met this gorgeous military captain, Hawk, and she's totally smitten! She said he's tall, muscular, and has piercing blue eyes... and a voice that sent shivers down her spine!" Cassie gushed, her eyes sparkling with delight. Lance's expression changed from curiosity to surprise, and he turned to Emily, "Is this true, Em?" he asked, a hint of amusement in his voice. Emily's face flushed, but she nodded, "Guilty as charged, Lance. I couldn't help but be impressed by him." Lance smiled, his eyes twinkling with amusement, "Well, well, well. Look who's got a crush on a military man!" he teased, chuckling. "Em, are you going to join the military base just to be close to him?" he asked, his voice playful. Emily's face flushed even deeper, but she stood her ground, "Hey, if I had the opportunity, I would join in a heartbeat!" she declared, her voice firm. Lance and Cassie burst out laughing, their teasing escalating. "Oh, Emily, you're so funny!" Cassie giggled. "Hawk can never notice you, even if you joined the military! You're so tiny and delicate, you'd get lost in the crowd!" Lance added, chuckling. Emily rolled her eyes, laughing along with them. "Hey, watch it, guys! I may not be as tall or strong as you, but I've got spirit and determination! And who knows, maybe I'd surprise you all and become a top-notch soldier!" she said, her eyes sparkling with defiance. The three friends continued to banter and tease each other, their laughter echoing through the hallway. Just as their laughter was dying down, the teacher, Mrs. Johnson, walked into the classroom, her expression stern. "Alright, settle down, class. Let's get started," she said, her voice firm. The students quickly quieted down, taking their seats and preparing for the lesson. Emily, however, couldn't help but feel a sense of dread wash over her. She hated mathematics class, and the thought of spending the next hour trying to make sense of numbers and equations made her want to scream. As Mrs. Johnson began to write on the blackboard, Emily's eyes started to glaze over. She tried to focus, she really did, but her mind kept wandering. Before she knew it, her head had nodded forward, and she was fast asleep. "Emily! Wake up! You're not going to sleep through my class!" Mrs. Johnson's voice cut through the air, sharp and disapproving. Emily's head jerked up, and she looked around, disoriented. "Outside, Emily. Now. And kneel down." Mrs. Johnson's expression was fierce, and she pointed to the door. Emily's face flushed with embarrassment as she got up and walked out of the classroom, feeling the eyes of her classmates on her. She knelt down outside the door, feeling the hard floor beneath her knees Just as she was settling into her uncomfortable position outside the classroom, she heard a commotion behind her. She turned to see Lance walking out of the classroom, a mischievous grin on his face. "Hey, Em, I couldn't let you have all the fun," he said, winking at her. "Lance, what are you doing? Get back in here!"Mrs. Johnson's voice came from behind him, grim and disapproving. But Lance just shrugged and walked over to Emily, kneeling down beside her. "I'm joining my friend in her time of need," he smile, his eyes sparkling with amusement. Emily was surprised, but also grateful for the company. "Thanks, Lance. I didn't think I'd have an ally in my misery," she said, smiling. Mrs. Johnson shook her head, "You two are something else. Stay out here and think about your behavior." As the door closed behind her, Emily turned to Lance, "You didn't have to do that, Lance. I was doing just fine on my own." Lance chuckled, "Hey pretender you just thanks me now and aside someone's got to keep you company in your exile. Besides, I couldn't resist the opportunity to tease Mrs. Johnson a bit." Emily laughed, feeling a bit better with her friend by her side. "Well, I'm glad you did. It's not so bad out here with you." Cassie, on the other hand, was the type to enjoy math class, so she remained focused in class, taking notes and participating in the discussion. Meanwhile, Emily and Lance kneeled outside, gossiping and laughing. Suddenly, Emily raised her head, and her eyes locked with the last person she ever expected to see Hawk, the military captain she had met at the recruitment meeting. He was standing in the hallway, looking even more handsome and imposing in his military uniform. Emily's heart skipped a beat as their eyes met, and she felt a rush of excitement mixed with embarrassment. What was he doing here? And why was he looking at her with such intensity? Lance followed her gaze and turned to see what had caught her attention. "Whoa, is that...?" he started to say, but Emily quickly hushed him, her eyes fixed on Hawk.
