I listened to my father’s voice echoing over the speaker in Slater’s office, but it didn’t feel like I was really hearing it. I sat in the plush chair across from his desk, my hands clenched against the soft leather seat, my knuckles white and screaming in my injured wrist. Slater was quiet.
