Evelyn fell asleep in my arms, and after about an hour of watching her peacefully nap the afternoon away, the sun began to set outside. I examined her face for any sign that she might wake up soon, but she was in a deep sleep. Her jaw was slack and she was breathing deeply and peacefully. Knowing she’d probably sleep most of the afternoon and night— she was still recovering and not in great health yet— I forced myself to get up and let her rest, despite the urge I had to move her to my own bed.
