I wasn’t sure when it happened. I wasn’t sure when Evelyn wormed her way into my chest, burrowing there, making herself at home inside of it— almost as if she’d always been there and I just hadn’t had the eyes to see her. I stared at the monitor in front of me, my eyes examining the small fractures in her rib cage. I didn’t understand what I was feeling— why the tiny cracks in her ribs felt like wide fissures in my own chest, threatening to shatter my insides into pieces. I wasn’t sure when she did it— or how she did it so quickly— but a space in my chest had been carved out for her, perfectly shaped to cradle her carefully inside of me as if she were the most precious cargo to ever exist.
