I found Evelyn in the kitchen when I got home. She was by herself, using a fork to play with a piece of tiramisu on a plate. I leaned against the door frame quietly and watched her, while she was still unaware of my presence. It looked like Harriet had gone off to bed. Her brow was furrowed in thought as she stared at the cake, and I could barely read her eyes in the dimmly lit kitchen. She looked tired. It was after two in the morning, and the dark circles under her eyes told me all I needed to know.
