*Evelyn* Where was I? I’d woken in a dark, musty room. The darkness was so thick, almost thicker than the hot, humid, stagnant air around me— making it nearly impossible to see more than a few inches in front of my face. I blinked my eyes awake, wondering how I got here. And where was here? Pain shot through my body as I tried to pull myself to my feet, and the sound of metal clinking together as I realized my feet were in shackles. I reached down, to feel them, and with horror, I traced the chain coming away from the painful metal loops on my ankles to see that it was connected to a large piece that was drilled into the floor. I huffed as I wiped sweat from my forehead, brushing my hair away from my face. Think, Evelyn. Where were you when you went to sleep? I couldn’t remember
