Chapter12

Dominic came back into the room quieter than he left. Aria was still in his bed, sheet pulled up to her chest, heart still racing from the footsteps in the hallway. He closed the door softly and locked it again. “She’s in the kitchen,” he said under his breath. “Getting water. She’ll go back to bed any minute.” He stood there for a second, listening. When no more sounds came from downstairs he crossed to the bed and sat on the edge. His hand found her bare thigh under the sheet. “We should stop for tonight,” he said, but his eyes said the opposite. Aria reached for him. “I don’t want to stop.” That was all it took. He leaned down and kissed her, slower at first, then deeper as the leftover adrenaline turned back into heat. The sheet was pushed aside. He settled between her legs again, already hard, and pushed back inside her with a low sound against her neck. They moved together quietly, carefully, the earlier tenderness mixed with fresh urgency. Aria kept her face pressed to his shoulder to stay silent. Dominic’s hand stayed over her mouth whenever a soft noise tried to escape. The bed barely made a sound. They were both close when the soft creak of the stairs reached them. Dominic froze mid-thrust. Aria’s eyes flew open. Another creak. Then another. Footsteps coming back up. He pulled out of her fast, rolled off the bed, and grabbed his pants. Aria scrambled for her sleep shirt and shorts, heart slamming so hard she felt sick. The footsteps were already in the hallway. Dominic yanked the sheets up roughly, shoved her toward the small walk-in closet, and pointed. She slipped inside just as a soft knock sounded on the bedroom door. “Dominic?” Her mother’s voice was quiet but clear. “Are you awake? I thought I heard something again.” He opened the door only partway, body blocking the view inside. Aria pressed herself against the closet wall, barely breathing, still half-dressed, the evidence of what they had been doing still wet between her thighs. “Just restless,” Dominic said. His voice sounded impressively steady. “Couldn’t sleep.” There was a pause. “Can I come in for a second?” her mother asked. “I feel like we haven’t really talked since I got back. You’ve both seemed… different.” Aria’s stomach dropped. Dominic hesitated for half a second too long. “It’s late. We can talk in the morning.” Another pause. Longer this time. “All right,” her mother said slowly. “In the morning then.” The door closed. Footsteps moved away toward the master bedroom. Only when that door shut did Aria dare to exhale. Dominic opened the closet. His expression was tight, eyes dark with leftover lust and fresh fear. “That was too close,” he said under his breath. Aria stepped out on unsteady legs. “She knows something’s off.” “I know.” They stood there in the dim room, still flushed, still smelling like each other, the weight of the near-miss settling between them. Dominic reached out and brushed his thumb across her lower lip. “Go back to your room,” he said quietly. “Carefully. We’ll figure this out tomorrow.” She nodded, slipped into the hallway, and made it to her own bed without a sound. She lay there staring at the ceiling, pulse still racing, the feel of him still inside her, and the sound of her mother’s suspicious voice replaying on a loop. Down the hall, in the master bedroom, her mother sat on the edge of the bed in the dark, staring at the closed door, a deep and uneasy frown on her face. Something was going on between her husband and her daughter. She was sure of it.
