CHAPTER FIVE The final day of the contract arrived quietly. There were no reporters outside,no family arguments,no dramatic phone calls,Just a stack of legal papers sitting on the dining table.Alexer stared at them,The contract had been simple.Six months,One and a half million dollars. Then goodbye,She had spent months looking forward to the freedom. Now she wasn’t sure she wanted it,Adrian entered the room.He looked at the papers. “It’s time.” he said Alexer nodded,He sat across from her,The lawyer explained the final terms. Both signed,The contract was officially over.Alexer looked at the document “So that’s it.” she asked Adrian nodded. “Yes.” She waited for him to say something else. He didn’t. She stood. “I should pack.” Adrian looked up. “Do you want to leave?” Alexer hesitated. “I don’t know.” “Then don’t decide today.” She looked at him. “Why?” “Because you don’t have to.” He stood. “The contract is over, Alexer. You don’t owe me anything.” “I know.” “You can go back to your apartment. You can take the money. You can move somewhere else.” “I know.” “You can marry someone else.” She looked at him. “I don’t want someone else.” Adrian went quiet,Alexer looked away. “I don’t know when it happened.” “When what happened?” “When you stopped being just Adrian Ashford.” He watched her carefully. “You’ve been different from everyone I’ve known.” “Different how?” “You listen.” He smiled slightly. “Sometimes.” “You remember things.” “Sometimes.” “You annoy me.” “Frequently.” She laughed,Then her expression softened. “And you made this place feel like home.” Adrian looked at her. “Alexer.” “I know this started as a contract.” She took a breath. “But I don’t want it to end that way.” He walked toward her. “What do you want?” She smiled. “I want a choice.” “You have one.” “I choose to stay.” Adrian stared at her. “You don’t have to.” “I know.” She looked directly at him. “That’s why I’m choosing it.” Adrian studied her face,as if trying to understand how six months had changed everything between them.He had expected the ending to be simple. He would sign the papers, she would take her money, and they would return to separate lives. But standing there with Alexer,he realized he had never wanted simple. He had wanted her to stay, even if he had been too afraid to admit it. For the first time,Adrian seemed unable to find the right words. Then he smiled,It was a genuine smile.Alexer had seen that smile before,But this time it felt different. The door opened,Sheila walked in carrying several shopping bags. She stopped when she saw them. “Am I interrupting something?” Alexer laughed. “No.” Sheila looked at the papers. “The contract ended?” “Yes.” “And you’re still here?” Alexer nodded,Sheila grinned. “I knew it.” Adrian looked confused. “Knew what?” “Nothing.” Sheila walked toward the kitchen,Alexer followed her. “You are impossible.” “I told you.” “You did not.” “I did.” They laughed. For the first time, the house felt completely normal. That evening,Adrian took Alexer to Marina del Rey.They walked along the beach while the sun disappeared beyond the horizon,There were no cameras,No reporters,No business meetings,Just the sound of the ocean.Alexer looked at him. “What happens now?” she asked “Now?” “Yes.” “We figure it out.” “That’s your plan?” “It’s the best one I have.” She smiled. “Very professional.” “I try.” For a moment, they continued walking without saying anything.Alexer looked at the ocean and realized she wasn’t afraid of the future anymore. For months, everything between them had been controlled by rules and deadlines. Now there was nothing written down to tell them what came next.It was strange, but somehow that uncertainty felt better than any contract ever could. They returned home later that night,Adrian stopped before entering the house. “I have something for you.” Alexer looked at him. “What?” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box,She stared. “Adrian.” He opened it,Inside was a ring.Alexer looked at him. “The contract is finished,” he said. “I know.” “This isn’t part of any agreement.” She smiled. “I know.” “There is no payment.” “Good.” “No deadline.” “Better.” “And no conditions.” She looked at him. “Then what is it?” “A choice.” He held out the box. “If you want to stay, stay. If you want to leave,I’ll understand.” Alexer looked at the ring. She thought about the woman she had been six months ago.She had entered this arrangement because she needed money. She had expected to leave with enough money to start over.Instead, she had found a family,She had found confidence,She had found someone who understood her,She had found a home. Most importantly, she had found a choice,Alexer smiled. “I’ll stay.” Adrian nodded. “Are you sure?” “Yes.” He closed the box. “Then there’s something else.” “What?” “I want to do this properly.” She laughed. “You mean propose again?” “Yes.” “You really are determined.” “I am.” She smiled. “Then I’ll think about it.” Adrian stared at her. “You’re joking.” “Maybe.” She laughed. He shook his head. For once,Adrian Ashford looked completely defeated. And Alexer enjoyed every second of it. She turned toward the stairs, trying to hide her smile. “Goodnight,Adrian.” “Goodnight?” “Yes.” “After doing that to me?” She glanced back. “You’ll survive.” He laughed softly. “I’m beginning to regret giving you a choice.” “You should.” She disappeared upstairs, leaving Adrian standing alone with the ring box in his hand.He looked toward the stairs and smiled. He knew Alexer had made her choice, but somehow,he already knew he would spend the rest of his life making sure she never regretted it.He smiled to himself. For the first time,he wasn’t afraid of what came next.Because whatever happened, they would face it together, not because of a contract, but because they had chosen each other.
