“I warned you, didn’t I? I said I was going to get you out of the way.” The words hit me like a slap. I froze, my hand mid-stir as I blended my evening coffee, the spoon clinking against the ceramic mug. It took a second for what Julie had just said to register. Slowly, I turned to face her, my fingers feeling numb on the handle of the cup. “What… what are you talking about?” I stammered, honestly confused at first. Julie sat against the kitchen counter, arms folded across her chest, her lips twisted into a grimace that dripped with malice. She appeared far too smug, too sure in her position. My mind was having trouble keeping up with her words, so I blinked and attempted to understand them. I turned back to the coffee and tried to block out the panic that was rising in my chest
