I climbed into the driver’s seat, locked the door, and started the engine, letting the peaceful hum settle me for a moment. The night was tranquil, almost soothing after everything with Bella and the unexpected encounter with Ryan. I took a breath, reached for my seatbelt, when my phone vibrated again. Tyler’s name came on the screen, and I gazed at it for a beat before answering. I put the phone to my ear, the low rumble of the automobile accentuating my voice. “Yes?” I said, pulling out of the parking lot and heading toward home. “Where are you at this time of night?” His voice was icy, direct, and for a second, I felt my defenses rising instinctively. “Since when did you start caring about where I am?” I replied, my voice cool, hiding the edge of hurt from our last argument. “
