"I'm so sorry for your loss," a calm voice whispered, jerking me out of the deep thoughts I had fallen into as we made our way into the chapel where my mum laid. I quickly wiped off the small tears that had gathered in my eyes as I turned around to see who it was. Turned to be Mrs. Jenkins, one of my mum's old friends, "Thank you, Mrs. Jenkins." I responded, suppressing the lump in my throat while maintaining a faint smile. What I had just said seemed empty, but what else could I say? She smiled back and gave me a warm hug before disappearing back into the crowd. The air seemed thick as we moved farther inside, each step bringing me closer to the reality I'd been avoiding.
