Chapter Five

1103 Words
We Need to Talk The hall was quiet and everyone was looking at Alexander and Emma. Emma felt so confused and ashamed. If only the floor could open and swallow her, she would rejoice over it. Everyone's attention was on her, and she needed to tell the world who the real father of Liam was and what happened to him. Alexander's voice was calm though, but his eyes were passing another message entirely, curiosity. “Follow me,” he said and turned away from the crowd, who had been so quiet and confused about the situation. Some were even whispering to one another why Mr. Knight was taking the matter so seriously. Emma's legs were heavy, and she felt ashamed. She managed to follow Alexander into a private room behind the stage. As the door closed behind them, she felt her heart would be taken away from her because she was not prepared for this. “Explain to me why I feel there is a connection between you and me since the first day I met you. Especially now. Who is that boy to you?” Alexander asked. Emma couldn't look at him. She was quiet for a while. Alexander hit the table and asked her to talk because this wasn't a joking matter. Emma managed to speak, Liam was missing his dad, and I felt for him. Nothing but that, Mr. Knight. “Did you just say you feel for him?” Alexander was becoming impatient. “Yes, sir,” Emma replied. “Look into my eyes and tell me whose son he is," Alexander said this time in annoyance. Instead of Emma responding, her eyes were filled with tears. She started crying, and Alexander asked again: “You are wasting my time. Whose son is Liam?” “Mine,” she responded softly with tears. “I know that already. Who is Liam's father? Emma's heart was very heavy. Despite knowing she had to talk, she felt it was wrong to say it. “Please, Mr. Knight, you are asking me too many questions and I don't know what to say,” Emma said, sobbing. The look seems familiar, and the picture is getting clearer to him now. He was looking at her face, the way her hands shook and how she was trying to avoid his eyes. He was getting the picture clearer. He remembers the charity dinner they had six years ago. She remembered he spent a night with a woman. He was drunk, though, but he feels the same thing whenever he is around Emma. The woman had gone the next morning: no words, no contact address. He opened his mouth in disbelief. He walked back carefully and put his hands on his head. Suddenly, he said, pointing at Emma: “It was you ... that night…six years ago, it was you.” Emma couldn't look up. She was filled with shame. She wanted to talk, but her lips were too heavy for words. They were shaking as a result of crying. Alexander walked slowly closer to her and pointed at her again. “You left without saying a word. That boy has some traits that I had when I was young.” “Please, Emma managed to talk. Tears falling from her eyes: It's not what you think…” Alexander was very mad now and asked her what exactly she thought he was thinking. “You were hiding my son from me. You are now telling me it is not what I am thinking.” Alexander was sweating seriously now, and he needed answers to all his questions. “I had no choice but to keep his identity because if it was revealed, it would tarnish your image,” Emma said, sobbing. “If you could recall, she continued. “You were engaged then, and if I showed my face, you wouldn't believe me. You might even jail me,” she cried. “Your fiancée was also a rich and powerful person. She continued. “If you didn't jail me, she might,” Emma added. Alexander was confused. “Who are you to decide for me?” he asked. Emma responded. “I did not decide for you. I did what I felt was right for both of us.” He was very furious and could not look at Emma again. He turned away, running his hand through his hair. He was confused, then he turned towards her. “Keeping my child away from me is what you call right for us?” “I am sorry. I thought what I did was right because I didn't want to ruin your life. I am a commoner, and having a baby for you might be a shameful act for you.” Alexander was confused. He didn't know if he should thank her or blame her. He was just walking here and there, scratching his hair as if he wanted to pull it off. After a short pause, Alexander finally turned to face her. He looked as though he remembered something. He walked slowly towards Emma, and Emma thought he was coming to tear her apart. She was afraid and crying. “Please, don't kill me…I am sorry! I did it to protect your integrity.” Alexander then stopped as if he heard her plea. He whispered, “I want proof, I want a DNA test.” Emma asked softly. “DNA test?” “Yes, tomorrow morning, bring Liam to me. I need to find out the true identity of that boy. I can't have my son outside or far from me. Bring him, and let's end this madness. She managed to pull her two hands together, begging Alexander. “Alexander, please….don't do this!” He didn't answer her. As he was walking towards the door, his voice was hard, and he looked determined to get the DNA done. Nothing would stop him. “You have deceived me by keeping my son away from me. I don't want to believe you still have something else you are hiding from me,” he said. As he opened the door to vacate the building, reporters were already waiting for him with cameras. As one is asking one question about the boy's identity, another is asking about Emma's. “Is it true you just found out that you had a secret child, Mr. Knight?” “Why has she kept the son away from you till now?” Emma was shocked that all their conversation was heard and what they had tried to hide had been opened to the whole world.
