The Little Boy The next morning, the weather was much colder than usual. Emma and Liam walked to the park before school. They were walking and gisting while both smiled, looking each other in the eyes. “Mommy!” Liam called to Emma softly, and Emma replied with a smile. “Yes, dear. Do you need anything?” “Are you sure Daddy will come back to me one day?” Liam asked in a quiet voice. He looked worried but still had hope to meet with his father one day. Emma felt as though something huge had just hit her. She managed to smile and kneel in front of her son. She looked at him, and Laim looked back. She smiles softly and rubs her hand through his hair. “Your daddy will return to you, my dear. He is just busy at the moment. But, be assured, you will meet him soon.” She smiled again. Liam was very happy to hear that. He smiled and hugged Emma. “Thank you, mummy.” He said joyfully. “ When he comes back to me, I will tell him you are taking care of me.” They both laughed and hugged each other. But Emma wasn't comfortable with the question. Alexander was walking near the park. He saw Emma and Liam, and he stopped. He was looking at Liam again and wanted to figure out something. He wanted to know why he was so connected to the boy the first time he saw him. Emma observed him, and he quickly held Liam by his hand. “Sweetheart, we have to go now. We have to go to school so that you won't be late.” She quickly took Liam away from the place. Alexander didn't remove his gaze from Liam. He was looking and feeling there was a connection between him and Emma, just that he didn't know where or how. Emma kept walking without looking back. This time, a bit faster, but trying not to panic. She was thinking Alexander had seen that reaction, but she really wanted to avoid looking too much looking because she might be forced to tell him the truth. Emma was at the office later that day, working quietly at her desk. She focused on her design, and this time, she didn't want to be distracted even if Alexander looked at her today. She saw him walking past her office, but she pretended she hadn't seen him. He looked at her, but this time, he was not comfortable. He wanted an answer to the questions that had been disturbing him in his head. Emma tried to pretend she didn't notice him, despite that she was panicking. Alexander observed Emma wasn't looking at him, so he walked away calmly. Alexander came again during lunchtime, but this time, he stopped at her desk. He was looking at Emma, but this time, Emma looked up, and he said softly, still looking at her. “Your son…” he paused, looking at Emma's reaction. “ Who did you say he is to you?’’ “My nephew…a friend's child,” she quickly said to correct her mistake. “Your nephew or a friend’s child?” Alexander asked softly. This time, Emma gave a direct response, a friend's child. She quickly looked down to continue with her design to cover up her nervousness. Her hands were shaky, but she managed to control them. Alexander looked at her, but she didn't look back. He didn't ask more questions, but he was troubled. He walked away quietly. After he left, Emma sighed, touching her chest. After work, Emma went to Liam's school to pick him up. He was very happy to see her. He ran towards her to hug her. He quickly took his toy while Emma carried his bag. He was thinking about the question Alexander asked her in the office today. She thought to herself that Alexander already knew the truth she was hiding. She felt so uneasy with herself. Either she likes it or not, the truth will surface sooner than she expected. She had better get prepared. In the evening that day, Liam was sitting on Emma's lap, and he was looking at a picture in a magazine. He pointed at a man's picture and asked Emma if his daddy looked like that. Emma smiled softly and told Liam that his dad was taller and more handsome than what was in the magazine. “Does my dad look handsome like your boss?” Liam asked, but this time, Emma felt the secret was exposed. Liam had never been so inquisitive as this, especially when asking about his father. She just smiles and tries to talk about something else. The next day at work, Alexander walked to Emma's desk. Emma greeted him, looking down. Instead of Alexander responding. He asked her a question that almost made her think the ground should swallow her. “Did your…friend's boy talk about me?” Emma didn't know what to say, and this time, she didn't want to make a mistake. Instead of saying something, she shook her head slightly. Then, she said no softly. Despite that her response was firm, Alexander still felt what she told him wasn't the truth. He was still there, looking at her to be sure he was not just choking her with his frequent appearance and questions. After a while, he left. That night, Alexander found it hard to sleep. He walked towards his desk and pulled out a folder from the last charity event they conducted for children. He saw a picture of a boy that was familiar with that boy. He picked it out and looked carefully at it. His curiosity gets higher that there is more to that boy than what he thought.
